Hey everyone,
I've got some gift cards to basspro and was wondering if you could let me know if they are known for having particularly good values on anything. I've done some browsing on their site, I've tried checking slickguns, and I've looked at their circulars. Unfortunately, nothing really stands out. I may just pick up a couple of lifestraws for camping, but was wondering if there was anything I should be looking at (firearms related, not fishing). Thanks everyone!
 
The upside to Bass Pro is they have a LOT of outdoor/hunting/camping/fishing/shooting/reloading stuff in one spot.

The downside is that it's usually more expensive than everywhere else.
 
If you're looking for good deals on anything gun related, do not go to Bass Pro Shop, Cabela's, or Gander Mountain. They sell for pretty close to list price. You can do much better at a LGS.
 
never seen good deals with anything firearm related, but have seen some decent deals on clothes in their clerance rack

Find something you like, wait for it to go on sale.

Also, make sure you get one of their rewards cards. You'll accrue points you can use as cash on future purchases. I've occasionally had anywhere from $60 to $300 in "points" on the card.

That's how I'd maximize the mileage on your gift cards.

Never been in a GM, but my Cabelas actually has a pretty large used gun section, and has a lot of odds and ends that are well priced. New guns always seems to be less than any LGS, but it is true sometimes you can find the deal of deals on the used gun rack of a LGS.
 
Guess I didn't really answer the question, but it kind of depends on what you like. As far as guns occasionally you'll see some ok priced used guns or a reasonable price on a hunting weapon right after that season has ended. Ammo is kind of platform dependent rifle ammo is going to be mostly hunting loads and handgun is probably going to be a tad more expensive than you'd see at walmart.

Fishing gear is reasonably priced it seems. Everything else tends to be pretty damn over priced, but occasionally you can find something that is only a dollar or two more than elsewhere. Like every they do mark stuff down for clearance and thats the only way you'll find a true "deal" at bass pro.

they have pretty good sales on good clothing sometimes. The hunting and firearm stuff is not as good a deal. Prices on reloading components and equipment are sometimes good on sale but fat chance you'll find that anytime soon.
 
We just had a Bass Pro Outpost open about 1 mile from the house. Their firearms prices are a bit higher than Academy Sports right across the street from them. They don't gouge on ammo prices. Clothing is fairy pricey but good deals do come up on sales. Last week bought a long sleeve 3x Tall for 9.99. Original price was 59.99. No one wears long sleeve sport shirt here so guess they wanted them cleared out. They were gone in 2 days.
 
I never bought anything gun related at Bass Pro, but I've spent a boatload of money buying fishing tackle from their catalog back in the day.

I've been into a couple of their stores, and they strike me as a tourist destination, not a place to go to actually buy things.
 
Sign up for a credit card and get 10% off your purchases that day. You can cancel it every 3 months and then sign up for another. It's good on guns, too.

I didn't know about it until the staff told me. I bought $1500+ of boating accessories (24-volt trolling motor, Lowrance HD5, etc.) and saved $150. I would have bought more, but they only approved me for $1500 - it was thru BofA and I already had a BofA credit card with a $20k limit.

Actually I saved more, because when you buy a boat you get a discount card that's good for 2 years (20% off BP brands, 10% off name brands, but not guns, electronics, $300 Garcia reels, etc.)

Fwiw, some folks work one day per month to get the 40% employee discount on house brands.

edited to add: Waiting for a sale worked for me. I waited 2 months for the March fishing sale and the only outboard they put on sale was the one I wanted - a 9.9 Mercury marked down from $2200 to $1700. Locally I was quoted $2410 on a 9.9 Yamaha and $2300 on a 9.9 Honda. All 4-strokes.

They price match. It's not widely known. Get it in print or show them the lower price on your smartphone. It has to be a brick and mortar store not online only.
 
They will match your local gun store too, but have the Bass Pro guy call them from your own cell, not a store phone. Most LGSs are too savvy to take a call from BP because they know a price match is a sale lost.
 
I wanted to say thanks for all the input. Based on your comments, and a quick look around the store, I ended up getting two lifestraws. I will say the 9mm ammo was priced relatively close to what walmart was offering, but only in 50 rd boxes. The 100 rounders are so much better of a value, so I passed on that. Thanks again for the help. I'm happy with the purchase and will need to remember to bring quarters next time for my daughter to try the electronic shooting gallery.

I remember when they were "Mail order only" for the most part and were a cheap place to get name brand stuff. Same was true for Cabelas in the 60s. Only ones that had ever heard of Cabelas were those of us that looked at the small ads in the back of Outdoor Life and Field and Stream. Now, only time I go to either of them, or Gander Mountain, is when I have some Gift cards to get rid of. Seems like all of them concentrate more on Women's clothing nowadays than Sporting Goods.
 
Same here. Great selection but expect to pay full MSRP.

Primers are $40+ per 1k.
Powder is $30-$34 a pound.
Bullets aren't too bad if you're just wanting one box.
Guns are outrageous.

Usually I just buy clothes there. You can find good sales on them.

I do accrue points/money on my rewards card. That's the only way I'll buy a gun there, if I can save up enough (Probably won't, because I only have about $15 now).
 
Some good prices on clothing and camping stuff. In general guns and ammo are over-priced. I've found some good prices on shotguns there but nothing like the great prices sportsman's warehouse has.

They are the only store with anything close to 5% back (and as much as quadrupled on member nights) on their credit card (1% everywhere else) and they are much closer to me than Cabela's. I pretty much go there to get 1% of my groceries and gas and other gun purchases back in "free stuff".

Keep an eye of the website. On occasion they have free shipping and you can at times get decent bulk ammo deals. I got about 2000 rounds of 9mm for under $200 a thousand awhile ago by watching for sales and coupon codes.
 
Optics.

Generally all the better glass is priced exactly the same everywhere. Most manufacturers make retailers agree to sell at a certain price or they won't let them carry the merchandise. If you have a gift card you'll in effect save some money on optics over buying them somewhere else. The only times you see Leupold, Zeiss, or several other brands not selling at MSRP is discontinued items.

I have a Cabelas credit card that builds points. They will also send out coupons at times for so much off to card holders. Several years ago I had about $225 in points. I used that along with a $75 off coupon and free shipping to buy a $500 scope for $200.
 
Big box retailers....

The "big guns" of the outdoor/camping/sporting goods industry; Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, etc seem way over-priced with high mark up.

These mega stores appeal to many consumers. They are big, well stocked & offer a campy/outdoor decor that makes you feel welcome.
I think these locations work best for the regular consumer or those who aren't well versed in the products/weapons/gear.
Don't get me wrong, I buy items too from these shops & like the looks but I mostly get stuff on sale or discounted. Mostly clothes or hats, not guns or ammunition.
It seems strange that companies like Gander Mountain or Cabelas which were mail order & fairly spartan in the 1980/1990s boomed into these big retail spaces all over the USA. :rolleyes:
I'm surprised LL Bean or The Sportsman's Guide didn't expand the same way. They each have loyal customer bases & could grow in many demographic areas of the US.
US consumers don't buy products as much as they buy brands.
 
Like everything else, you have to shop around and do your homework. I bought a Ruger #1 .204 at the Bass Pro in Springfield, MO at a very good price, but that's not typical. Same with Cabela's in KC, KS. Whoever is the recipient of your generosity should shop and not just spend.
