Bayonet on a M&P?

I was looking through the Smith & Wesson catalog this evening and saw something that I was wondering about.

I notice on the M&P 15 that there is a model (MOE version) that has a bayonet lug on it. Would you actually be able to use this with a military M-4 bayonet? Reason why I ask is because the civilian M&P has a barrel 1.5-2 inches longer than the military version. Wouldn't the bayonet ring be too far back on the barrel? Maybe I'm missing something here so please fill me in. Because as I see it the lug is useless.

Some knife companies make bayonets for 16" barrel carbines.

Some companies sell bayonet adaptors that will let a Mil spec bayonet work on a 16" barrel carbine.

It has a bayonet lug because the casting for the mil-spec gas block has it. First, most civilians wouldn't know how to effectively use a bayonet on a rifle, and second, the bayonets are intended to be used with an A1 or A2 flash suppressor, which almost nobody with even an inkling of common sense uses on their rifles anyway, so yeah, it's pretty much useless.

I wouldn't say it's completely useless. They make a light rail that can attach to the bayonet lug. I've never used one but it probably works fine.

Pretty bold statement. The birdcage does a pretty good job at its intended purpose. Can't top it for the $15 that you can usually get a mil-spec A1 or A2.

I didn't think about that. Yeah I suppose its easier and cheaper to just use the same casting mold as the milspec one already used.

Agreed most don't know how to use one anyway. We got training on it but on my last deployment there were few that could actually mount one with M203's being fairly common.

Agreed. It will sell more carbines I'm sure. Kinda funny but I agree with you on that one.

I have a standard A2 on my AR currently. Are there better ones out there? Of course there are. But for the paper punching I use my personal AR for it works just fine for me. Would I be adverse to replacing it? No, but its not an expense that I really need to lay out currently.

That is a very mature approach to things. Rock what you got till what you got don't get it done no more, then upgrade. Too many people get hung up on what hangs off the rifle, or carbine, than actually being able to use and shoot the rifle or carbine.

As a side note, it was one of the items that was deleted during the Clinton Regime. People were paying big money for pre-ban guns with the lug. Get it for an investment.

I'll probably never put a bayonet on an AR15, but it pisses off Sarah Brady. That's reason enough for me.

I don't know if S&W makes a midlength, but you can mount a standard bayonet on a midlength since it has the same length of barrel past the gas block as an M-16 or M-4.

But you can't on a 16" barrel with a carbine length gas tube.

Don't know how to use a bayonet? Uh, pointy end goes in front, and into bad guy. What is my ignorant civilian ass missing???
