I've bought an M1 Carbine made by Saginaw which has the type 2 barrel band. I'm thinking about replacing the barrel band with a type 3 with bayonet lug.
I prefer the look of the bayonet lug, and I'm going to remove the front sight anyway, so replacing the barrel band wouldn't mean a lot of work.
I'd like to use the rifle in matches every now and then, so accuracy is important to me. I've heard that Jerry Kuhnhausen's shop manual says that the bayonet lug might be detrimental to accuracy. However, this article from Precision Shooting Magazine claims the exact opposite:
http://de.scribd.com/doc/27034567/Accurizing-the-M1-Carbine
The author calls the type 3 band and bayonet lug "a necessity if you want to achieve any kind of accuracy with the carbine".
Can anyone confirm if the different barrel bands affect accuracy in any noticable way?
