I was out shooting with a friend yesterday, and he let me try out his Mosin Nagant. I had been wanting to buy one for a while, and all the ones I've seen had bayonets attached. His did not, so I asked him about it and he said it was illegal in NY to affix a bayonet to a rifle. I know we've still got an AWB, that might not permit bayonets on "assault" weapons, but surely that doesn't apply to a five foot long, 70 year old, bolt action rifle? I couldn't find any laws mentioning bayonets outside of the AWB, does anyone know if my friend was right or not? Thanks.

Does anyone know the particular law that forbids them?

I've heard that the Mosins are designed to be fired with the bayonet extended, and removing them may alter the accuracy. I'd wait until I left the state to pick one up if that's the case.

Even if there IS a law on the books, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're fixing the bayonet and preparing to shoot someone in downtown Buffalo. I'm about 99% sure that this law doesn't exist and even if it DOES exist, it's never been enforced. So unless you're robbing a bank or shooting a rival gang member, don't worry about it.
