Just saw this over on live-leak. Just a reminder to all of us. When any or all 4 rules are broken, bad things happen. This happened in Russia recently.

Summary:

Child left at firing line with loaded gun. Mom & friend go to check targets. Kid shoots mom's friend while handling a gun which was assumed to be unloaded.

Write up on LL:
Apparently, blame is also being laid at the feet of the instructor, who did not check the weapon to ensure it was not loaded.
In shooting club in the Volokolamsk Highway, a 12-year-old student has accidentally killed a friend of his mother with a rifle, which he thought was not loaded with ammunition.

The footage shows the mother of the shooter and her friend going to check the target, the boy moved to the table where instructed and from where he was to shoot the rifle.

A female instructor asked the boy to take the rifle in his hands, without making sure that the weapon at this point was not loaded.

At some point, the child apparently jokingly took aim at the people in front of him, and pulled the trigger, fatally hitting the family friend in the head and killing him instantly.
While police acknowledge the boy is also at fault for playing around with the loaded weapon, charges are expected to be laid against the instructor for not ensuring the rifle was empty at the time.

Looks like about every safety rule was violated!

What kind of "instructor" lets people handle guns while other people are down range?

The range should have been first declared cold before people walked out onto it. All firearms should have been laying on the table unloaded with the action open and no one is to touch any other firearms whatever the condition.

Things like this happen when the rules of safety are taken for granted.

They are WALKING DOWN RANGE while the others are fiddling with a rifle on the bench!? That alone should have been shut down instantly with everyone involved ejected for life. It's a huge violation even if the thing is unloaded.

This is why I yell at people for touching iron when the range is cold.

That's pretty tough to watch. Very, very sad.

At my range, when it goes cold all guns are to be holstered or in the racks. I thought it was ridiculous until one day a new guy didn't rack his rifle and decided to check me out with his scope as I was walking back from my target. That is an awful feeling seeing a head behind a scope.

I know racking the guns isn't needed as long as everyone knows and obeys the 4 rules, but it's comforting knowing nothing is pointed in my direction with some moron behind it.
