I believe it was in Stephen Herrero's book, "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance," is where I read his stats on the potential for more aggression after being shot if not downed by the shooter.

So this guy finds a big black bear boar bothering his chickens and so he shot it on Tuesday. Bear runs off. On Wednesday, the guy goes to look for the bear, finds it, and it is still alive. So, he shoots it again. The bear was not happy about being shot again and attacked the man who sustained numerous injuries. The bear was later killed by ODFW. The man is expected to recover.

I haven't found out what he shot the bear with, but whatever it was, he should have done a better job, twice. As ever, a wounded animal is potentially a very dangerous animal. Prepare accordingly when you go looking for an animal you shot previously, particularly if it is something like a large bear boar. Maybe take a friend along that shoots really well.

"Wounded bears can be dangerous. ODFW is aware of at least three incidents when wounded bears attacked hunters who had shot but not killed them. None were fatal.

Bear attacks are rare but tend to occur when bears are wounded, when they are being fed by people and lose their natural wariness, or when they are surprised by people or their dogs. Oregon has not documented any fatal bear attacks."

" maybe take a friend along that shoots really well "

Or at least one you are sure you can outrun !!.. Although Wyoming fish and game discourages this , even if you are convinced the friendship "has run it's course"

Seriously , the phrase , "use enough gun" , came about for a reason !

WIthout a doubt, I will be significantly more irritated and aggressive if someone shoots and wounds me.
I may have just taken a video and let the bear mess with the chickens. It's hard to say because I would be so surprised to see a bear in Iowa.

Shortly after moving to Arkansas. I was trying my luck with modern guns season in Southern Slyamore WMA. Had a black bear of goodly size walk behind me. He was so quiet I never knew he was there. I guess I got sized up and found too skinny. He sniffed and "meh" on down the road. I laugh now that I'm old. But I thought I was a gonner. He easily would have had me before I raised my rifle.

I can't blame the bear. I've been shot before (luckily the "deadlier" rounds hit a SAPI plate and the only one that hit skin was basically a scratch) and I was more than a little "upset" with the perpetrator afterward. Had he not met his own demise almost immediately after I could have easily seen myself dealing with him much more harshly than I would have otherwise.
