Hello,
I'm building a so called "Beater". It started life is a Remington 700 ADL 7mm Rem. Mag. that a friend won at an whitetails deal. I bought it from him because I at the time looking for something to replace may 700 BDL 270 Win. Anyway I got a Richard's brown on brown lam. stock. As I was inletting the stock , the snowball started to roll as they say and I came up with the idea to install alum. pillers, glass bed the action and install a magazine.I've now finally got'n that far. It's come time to finish the stock and I've always thought that I was going to put a walnut stain to daken it up before the finish . But I looking for a finish that when dry would not have a shen to it. I've been use tru-oil on orther "fancy" stocks but would like something more dull.

Any thoughts ??

Tru-oil dulls nicely with steel wool after the final finish. BLO (boiled linseed oil) is also more dull than a regular Tru-oil finish.

I use pure tung oil. http://www.realmilkpaint.com/oil.html

It's waterproof, has a fairly dull finish and it's oil so you can reapply more if you get a ding or it dries out.

The only caveat is you need to put about four to six coat on initially and it takes about a week to completely polymerize. I usually do a coat, wait 24 hours, do another, wait 24 hours, etc. Then let it set a week.

BLO would work too.

Well here it is from the start

And this is the bedding

And with one coat of walnut stain
I'll post more pic's with filler sealer.
What do you think ?

Go out and buy a can of truckbed spray paint! Adds texture, a nice uniform finish. Wears great! and protect the wood from scapes and dings. If you ever wear thruogh it.. give it another coat! And it has a nice dull finish. B

Two More Pic's now with two coats of stain and two coats of filler sealer.

Hey custom, looks great to me. I understand the comment about plywood to a point but it sure as heck looks a lot better than a chunk of plastic and considering the price of a nice walnut stock that you hate to scratch or ding, its a good choice. Also a good finish.
