Bed an AR ???

Anyone here glass bed AR type rifles? I've thought about bedding the lower just below the rear takedown pin to take up a little slack in the upper / lower fit. Better to cut/fit an accuwedge? Other methods better? Thoughts?

I guess you could but I have never given it much thought. My AR has almost zero play and unless you have a substantial amount of play I don't think it will cause any issues. But it might not hurt to tighten it up it up if you want.

A couple things got me to thinking about it. First, I glassed a bolt action the other day and thought 'why not'. I know; I have issues... The other reason is the firm grip I need to use to get consistent results. With a bolt gun from prone, I'm not gripping the rifle if you know what I mean. If I try to shoot an AR with the same relaxed hand, results are poor. I was thinking play between upper/lower could be the reason for this. Maybe all the strange recoil from the carrier reciprocating. I dunno...

On Colt lower and milspec upper combos I've used a combination of adjusting the offset screw and installing an accu-wedge to remove all play. I've never thought about any further "bedding" or tightening, but it might be worth a try. Then again, the halves are secured together by a takedown pin, which limits how tight the fit can be. I wouldn't want an AR that has to be compressed in a vise to remove the pin with a punch and a hammer...

There are several devices like this one out there. Also you can try a Google of Accu Wedge. I never used either.

The JP pin and the Accu Wedge both work well. I've had to trim the accu Wedge for a couple receivers where the pocket was not milled as deep as milspec and would not allow the receiver to close. One was an Armalite/Eagle Arms. I don't recall what the other one was. Couple minutes on the belt sander and it was good to go. I'm not too sure that glass bedding would gain you anything over either of those options except a lot of work for the same end result.

Another vote for Accu-wedge. It's easier and not permanent.
