I have older rem model 700 bdl 25-06. it is basicly stock the way it came from the factory. the barrel is not free floated, the stock contacts it at the end of the forearm.

I want to glass bed the action. do you think free floating the barrel will help accuracy? I know it would with a bull barrel, but this is a sporter conture.

It shoots well now about 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. I wanna see if I can get another 1/4 inch or so better.

thanks

i've never herd of glass bedding and free floating hurting accuracy as long as there done right.....i'm taking it this is a hunting rifle?is the 1/4 improvement in accuracy going to affect you killing a deer with the rifle? that all depends on how far you intend to shoot this rifle

Free-floating will not necessarily greatly affect first shot accuracy, or even your first 3 shot accuracy, which is all you need to worry about on a deer gun. If you are target shooting for tight groups, it should significantly improve accuracy. 3/4" at 100yards is not bad, especially if you are using factory hunting ammo, and 1/2" may be attainable with bedding and floating, but its not likely.

However, if you do want to take the time/expense to properly glass bed the action, you should also free-float it.

It is a hunting rifle, and i dont really think that it will make much differnce in the preformace of the rifle as far as killing a deer. But, I am sorta on a quest to see how accurate this rifle will shoot, just for the fun of it. Plus it might make some difference on a 400 yard shot!

if i was going to make 400yd shots on deer i'd buy a sub moa vanguard lol j/k if it shoots 3/4 moa at 100 you will still make a kill shot at 400yds

a deer's kill zone is roughly 10". assuming you can hold the rifle, you should be easily under 10" groups at 400, maybe even under 5" (strictly by the numbers, .75 @100 = 3.0 @400).

if you are getting 3/4" at 100 w/ factory ammo now, the last thing you should do is mess with the bedding or floating on that rifle.

if, however, you truly believe there is more accuracy to be had, float the barrel, then bed the action. again... i wouldn't mess with a 3/4" @ 100 yards with factory loads rifle.

my groups are with handloads.

I would not think that bedding the action could hurt anything, could it?

I quess the real question is to freefloat or not.

You could shrink your 100 yard groups by bedding(all actions are bedded just some better than others) the action and free-floating the barrel. You also can possibly open up your groups to over and inch(or worse). Your choice but I wouldn't mess with it since it is a hunting rifle.

I shouldn't hurt to free-float it. Besides if it doesn't work you can always put a new pressure pad in.

On the other hand 3/4" at 100yds is pretty good already, so I totally agree with Vern, leaving it alone is the safest bet.

I guess that I will play it safe and not mess with the bedding. I think that I will get a old gun and try to learn how to glass bed with it. I have an old military trainer .22 that would be a good candidate.
