Anyone have a favorite pistol safe for use while I am home? I have a two year old and need to have it locked where he can't get to it but I can in a hurry. Love biometric but only have about $100 to spend. Thanks!

I have one of the Gunvault combination models. It has worked great for years. It was about $100 with tax. After seeing issues with biometric logon on laptops, there is no way that I would trust my life to the technology.

GunVault with the finger pad (not biometric - buttons with a key backup). Works great as a bedside safe. Not strong enough to keep out a determined attack, but plenty good to keep the little ones out of it. Less than 5 seconds to open it, even in the dark. Get the deluxe model - it has a light inside and comes with an a/c adapter. The batteries are for power failure backup.

Just ordered the Gunvault from sportco.com. It was $83 shipped. It's the 1000 STD model. I have a little one coming and wanted to get used to keeping the gun by my bedside in a safe instead of the dresser.

There is also the option of keeping a small CC piece on you while at home. I think you will find that it is very unobtrusive in your pants pocket, and it is much faster than trying to fumble with a safe during an emergency.

I have a young one at home as well... I usually lock the safe and keep my J-frame in my pocket.

Agree 100%. We had a document safe with the biometric pad for a while. It maybe worked 50% of the time. No way I'd want to mess with that in the stress of the moment. I got the bigger 2-tier model since I have big hands - the bigger opening is a lot easier for me to grab my 4" 686 out of than the smaller one level models - I just removed the 2nd shelf. Then, I selected a combination that the little boy is unlikely to figure out, but easy enough for me to access the safe in less than 2 seconds with practice (which I do regularly). I really like that in addition to programming single button pushes, you can program it to require multiple buttons be pressed at the same time (or any combination of single and multiples).

I lock up my Gunvault in my big safe during the day when I carry in the house / out in town. It only comes out at night before going to bed.
