I have wanted to shoot these 300yard club matches for awhile and just never got around to it. I was recently gifted an Athlon Argos BTR 10-40-56 scope and began to work on putting together a "cheap" setup to get my feet wet. I tore down the scope, rings, bases that were on the rifle, cleaned the bases, mounting holes and re Lock Tite the base screws. Why in the world does a tube of Lock Tite cost almost $10? I said the heck with those people and picked up a tube of Permatex thread locker for $3 cheaper. I tried Warne Maxima high rings first but they sat way too high, giving me a chin weld. I sent those back and installed medium rings which fit a bit better. I could probably go low but the back and forth with Amazon and UPS got old. Plus with my luck they would be too low. I did get a new toy that I had been wanting for awhile. I got a Wheeler torque screw driver because I always take my screw driver out of my back for other projects and never return it or the bits get lost. With the Wheeler I won't be using that one to install door knobs, etc. It's a pretty neat tool and appears well made.

I checked the free float on my Boyds classic stock and found it to grab the paper half way toward the barrel nut. Off the the hardware store I go to buy a sanding block with the 45 degree bevel on it. Well that didn't work out so well so back to the store again for 80 grit sand paper. I sanded the inside of the stock and tried doing even passes on each side but the radio and tick tock got the best of me and one side was sanded more than the other. After fixing the other side I was able to slide a piece of laminated paper all the way to the barrel nut with 0 grabbing.

Next was to clean the barrel because its got 150 shots through it and not cleaned. A little soaking in Boretech Carbon cleaner, Boretech copper cleaner and finished up with Boretech Eliminator and a nylon brush.

Loaded up some 69gr Sierra Matchkings with Varget to be tested tonight. Next I will try some 73/75gr Hornady bullets and Varget.

Going to throw a Limbsaver Grind to fit recoil pad on the Boyds Classic stock to increase LOP. That should be fun! I had a buddy grind one for my Marlin 1895 and for final fit he installed it on the gun and got the belt sander a little too close to the stock and took some of the stain off. I will be doing this one myself this weekend.

Next was installing a Boyds Pro Varmint on my Savage Mark II. I got the stock and was eager to install it and give it a test run. Not! Boyd's doesn't send a metal floor plate or trigger guard with the stock. I had to order the floor plate and trigger guard and it was here within 3 days. DIP was quick to ship the parts and while I think they are extremely over priced they are quality. The stock doesn't require free floating at all but there is a larger gap on one side. Nothing a little sand paper wont cure.

I will be installing an older, Simmons 6-20-40 AO with Burris Signature Z rings on the Mark II and using it for amature benchrest shoot at the end of this month. Just have to sight it in and G2G. I am replacing the scope on my hunting Mark II with the 4-12 Bushnell that was on the FV.

Interested in your results !

Fwiw, A wooden dowel , with sand paper wrapped around it works great.

That is a big scope !

Rifle looks great.

And if you are interested, Caldwell makes rubber feet for your setup... stops the tearing up of the bench surface.

I went to 2 stores and couldn’t find a pine or hardwood dowel straight enough.

Thanks! I first had a nutmeg stock on it but the grain and color looked like crap so they swapped it for the pepper.

I did see those and thought about getting them. The rest of the benches don’t have horse mats on them so the spikes seem to help.

Still been busy getting things ready.

Got to test out the rifle at 200yards after free floating it and shot about 1.5'' groups, found my Sierra Match King load, ordered an EGW 20MOA rail for the Mark II (installing tonight), testing several 22lr match rounds tonight, grind to fit pads will be here today, so will be working on installing those. Need to move the 223 scope back one notch on the base for better eye relief (doing tonight). Need to chronograph the Sierra Match King loads Friday, Chronograph my woodchuck loads, make a dope card and then sign up for a rimfire and centerfire match.

Fun stuff.

Have a Savage model 11 I picked up as a barreled receiver. It now has a model 12 Varmint barrel in 223 with an Athlon Argos 8-34X56 and a Boyds At-One Thumbhole stock. Currently awaiting a replacement stock,. First one delaminated.

Where did you get the barrel? Did you install it yourself?

The hardest part was removing the smooth barrel nut this one had. I ended up cutting it off with a Dremel. After I had the old one off it only took me about 15 minutes to finish.

Some suggest using a pipe wrench on those smooth nuts but a member sent me a picture of one ruined by doing that. Think of the smooth nut as being sacrificial along with the recoil lug.

I have the wheeler set that comes with the wrench for the smooth nuts.
Hit that sucker with heat till it smokes, then hit the wrench with 3lb Sledge and they almost always pop off on the first try.
Failing that, yeah I'll just pipe wrench the hell out of it, again, a sledge blow generally works better than trying to torque it off slowly.

I got the tools if anybody needs to borrow them

@Axis II - don’t think of the nut or lug as “sacrificial.” Just because someone doesn’t know how to use the right tools, doesn’t mean ruining parts is the right method.

Also have the Wheeler wrench and the NSS receiver clamp. Didn't work.

Whatever you say Champ! Not judgemental much or opinionated are ya!

I’ve changed a lot of Savage barrels without ruining a nut or recoil lug - and without any voodoo, as have a lot of other folks, including the guys who showed me how to do it. That’s not opinion.

And yeah, it seems apt that I’m judgmental of someone who would equivalently tell someone that lug nuts are sacrificial, just because they ruined theirs by using a pair of vise grips welded to a 3ft piece of pipe to remove them.

@Axis II - if you find your barrel nut is overtorqued, you can relieve some pressure by giving the barrel a bit of a twist - either direction actually works, turn the barrel and nut together, or hold pressure against the nut and turn the barrel toward inward, then turning both back out. Remember, the nut is tensioning the barrel against the receiver, so we can use that design to our advantage.

Of course, we ARE talking about applying greater than 70ft.lbs. of torque to break the nut free, so good grip and no slip is necessary.

You must have been watching thu the window but I believe you exaggerate the truth.

Ordered a sun shade for the Athlon, Limb saver grind to fit recoil pads to extend LOP to both the 22lr and 223rem, Norma Tac 22, SK Long Range match, SK standard plus, going to look for SK rifle match tonight, mounted the EGW rail the other night along with a Simmons 20x scope a great guy sent me. I am hoping to sight it in tonight with CCI standard and then shoot for groups with the SK and Norma ammo. Nothing really going on tonight or tomorrow so tonight will consist of loading ammo to be tested over the chronograph tomorrow. Also, have a 6mmBR barrel coming so pretty exited to install that and a trigger kit to my other Savage and keep chasing things to do.
