I have a Ruger No. 1 rifle.

The rear 'iron' sight is mounted on a partial rib (which includes the scope mounts) on the barrel.

The rear iron sight is unacceptable to me, it is too small and in my mind rather cheesy for a rifle of otherwise high quality.

Here's the question: Does the rear sight on a Ruger No 1 rifle 'drive out' (and back in, of course) as it appears, or does the screw just forward of the sight affect removal - or are there other preliminary steps I must take prior to simply pounding with a brass or plastic tip drift and large hammer?

I've searched on line and cannot find an answer. Thanks in advance.

Thank you very kindly.

I do not have an owner's manual - I bought the rifle 'used' (not much, really, but without most of the original directions). The manual available on line by Ruger may have the information, but I somehow over looked it.

Thank you most kindly, sir.

The one I just worked on had a small screw in front of the sight dovetail that locked it in place after the windage was adjusted. The screw tightned a small gib that bore against the front of the dovetail. After removing the screw, I was able to slide the sight out with my fingers, no tapping needed.
