Ditto on the .22. You can learn and practice, practice and learn, grip, sight alignment and trigger control inexpensively. These skills are transferable to larger centerfire handguns. Plus, it's a lotta fun to pop golfballs and clays and other reactive targets with a .22. I like an autoloader (mine is a Ruger MK II, stainless 6 7/8" bbl) simply because you don't have to stop and reload as often, and can have extra loaded magazines available. :)

Here's my 2 cents: Ignore the " conventional wisdom." Don't buy a .22 cal gun, unless you want a .22 cal gun. Don't buy a revolver if you want a semi auto. Try to shoot some different guns and guns in different calibers before you buy.

My advice, FWIW

1- Get the safety training before you do anything. Start with good habits before you develop bad ones and have to unlearn them.

2- Check out your states laws to find out if it's legal for you to own, possess, or even handle, a handgun. No sense getting yourself all cranked up if you can't.
