hey- i was planning to get a ruger gp-100 revolver .357 as my first handgun - however, i an going to apply for CCW ASAP, and i'm thinking i'll be probaly pack an autoloader far more frequently than a revolver. i've planned to get the aforementioned revolver first, then a Glock 19 (compact 15+1 9mm). however, i think i'd prefer the glock first.

i guess i kinda answered my own question, but what do you guys think? i know the glocks are very simple and have few parts, so mainenence probably wouldn't be that tough...

Hello TMM-

Many people around here feel that the best pistol for a person to learn on is a .22. They have virtually no recoil, not too loud and you can shoot all day for practically nothing. They help to ingrain some good habits and spare you some difficulties in starting with a full-on combat caliber.

If your tagline is right and you are still 15 years old, then you have either 3 or 6 years until you can apply for CCW, depending on location. I would suggest starting out now with a .22, if this is the case, and then purchasing a Glock or GP when time to carry is nearer.

If this isn't the case and you're already close to application time, then I would pick what you're most comfortable with. Which feels better to you? If you don't think you'll ever carry the GP, you should probably stick with the Glock. Though you could get one of the SP-101's, a smaller revolver, which carry quite nicely.

A plus for the revolver is that it can be loaded with very light .38 special loads which would be much better to learn with. Then full-power .357's can be used for carry.

Good luck in the decision!

Editted to add: I forgot the make note that the most important choice you can make, much more so than which type of pistol, is to get some training! Something like the NRA basic hangun course would be great, something to teach you the in's and out's of things like safety, technique, maintenance, etc.. Others can probably advise you much better on this.

"neither is a 22"

what?
The first handgun threads points to new shooters a lot of the time and the .22lr is the perfect learning platform. Whether or not this applies to you wasn't mentioned in your post.
If you are as your tag line says then I wouldn't worry to much about something that will be no less than 3 years down the road.

I would certainly not recommend a Glock as a beginners CCW. You really have to be more careful to prevent AD's.

Considered something with a stiffer DA first pull? Or how about the XD with the additional grip safety...

i guess i should have been more specific: i have a .22, well, grampa does, and i'll be bringing it to the range someday, along with some rentals to see how i like them.

pistolero: that's why i liked the Ruger as a first gun - .38's for practice and .357's for defence.
and yea, i'll be doing some course... NRA dealie, perhaps IDPA.

chris in VA: good point on the LDA action - but is it that easy to have an AD? perhaps i could add a heavier trigger spring?

perhaps i could get a used Heckler Koch USP .45, compact or fullsize - it's DA/SA... used runs about $500 on gunbroker.
