Any good range should have a range safety officer that can perform a range safety course that includes safe weapons handling. When you purchase your weapon have the dealer give you complete instructions on how to place your weapon on safe, load the weapon, place the weapon on fire, and how to fire the weapon. Then you need to know how to unload the weapon and once again secure it or make it safe. If you get a semi-automatic remember removing the magazine does not necessarily unload the weapon, there might still be a round in the chamber. Until you have visually checked the chamber the weapon is still considered loaded.

Always err on the side of caution. Always have the bolt open on a weapon when moving the weapon, that ensures that you can readily see that you have checked the chamber and it is unloaded. Never hand a weapon barrel first. Always check the chamber of a weapon when you pick it up or it is handed to you, first check the magazine though to ensure it is removed. Always keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction. Never point the weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

Help me out here guys...I am getting tired...I better sign off for now.

Alright, I think I've got a grasp of what I need to do.

Thanks for all the great help y'all, I realize alot of those questions probably seem really basic, but I'd rather hound smart people to get the details on the common and not so common sense than the trial and error way of doing things when it comes to firearms.

Again, thanks all.

Yeah, training is a must. Until I had my hunter safety course, I didn't realize all of the potential disasters that can occur.

Things that might seem seem safe to an individual can be deadly. Actions such as leaning a gun against a fence while crossing the fence have ended the lives of shooters when their gun is accidentally discharged during the crossing... etc.

CT...A thought for you.

There are several Appleseed Shoots in west and central New York, and Ohio as well, that you may be able to get to, without too much grief.

You are under 21, so the Appleseed Course is FREE to you, there may be a very small range fee.

If you let me know you are going to one, I can arrange that you get a loaner rifle (it will be a Ruger 10/22 with Tech-Sights and some other minor mods).

You will get quality Marksmanship Instruction, get to listen to some American Revolutionary War History, and meet some good folks.

Bring several buddies down and split the gas money, and many of these locations have camping, so you can even save more money.

I bet you can get to and from and spend a full weekend shooting, over 400 rounds, for less than 50-70 bucks, if you can split the gas a couple of ways.

Tough to beat that....You get your buddies lined up, and let me know how many, I bet I can get trainer rifles lined up..

PM me for more details if you want.
