Being probed for a break in

Thumper - that's one happy ending. Hopefully gramps has got a safe now and those crackheads never return.

The number one thing you should do that I have not seen here is to let the guys driving by know that you have seen them. Once they know they have been made, they will most likely move on to another target.

Go to Home Depot and get a 1 Million candlepower spotlight. Can be used for hunting too! It will light up your whole 'hood and any passer's by will know they have been seen. Then get a "Screw the dog, beware of Owner" sign. Total cost $29.99.

Happend to me once, same situation but I wasn't living there during construction.

Someone stripped the house of all it's new appliances during the night. Coulda been a subcontractor on the job, another contractor, or smalltime thieves. I found out that it was fairly common for people to get their houses stripped during construction.

If you live there, fence it in if you can, get or borrow a dog. Install big lights. i'm sure you have the "arm thyself" part taken care of.

I don't think it's a good idea to lure them in.

They might come in heavily armed with body armor. It would be a bummer to die wondering why they don't fall down when you shoot them.

Some guy in AZ died like that in spite of shooting the intruders multiple times.

The point is, it's not a good idea to assume that these guys are bumbling idiots. They could be real pros, and could be much better than you. And even bumbling idiots can kill people if they get lucky.

Even if you get them, the cost of cleaning up a house after a shooting death can be considerable. That's assuming there is no legal action taken. Remember civil suits are ALWAYS a possibility.

No signs of the BG's today....was around the house all day and had my eyes open wide the entire time. Only one hang up call today.

Started going over the house top to bottom thunking of what needs to be done....trouble with being educated about security tye things is that you see so many things to be done.

Off to Home Despot tomorrow to buy some goodies...maybe off to the local gun shop for a Mossberg 500 as well:D

Norton,

Think obout this.

Something you should do is make sure you have some type of alarm ready, like the singing fish mentioned above. You might want to use this as an excuse to get a few more guns too

Maybe it's time for the CZ52, eh? The noise from that thing going off would bring the entire neighborhood out:D

FSJeffrey - Norton;

I have read Prof. Lott's More Guns, Less Crime and would recommend it to anyone. Good book, but requires actual reading. I understand that there is now an updated & somewhat revised second edition. Has anyone read it?

Since I notice on Norton's tag line that he has an H&K USP, he is of course armed. By the way, what was that rather odd looking appliance in the picture? Almost obscured the book. Was it one of those Gacks, Gorks, whatever they are?

900F,I do indeed have the USP 9 ready with some Speer Gold Dots.....but the first "go to" gun is the .38 with HydraShoks......less to think about in the middle of the night...if given the time, the wife gets the revolver and I the USP.

Given my newly found wiring skills from the remodelling, I'll be replacing some of the security lights with motion or dusk sensors.....I took a look at the house tonight from the road as I came in and the front of the house if lit up very well. Got some adjustments to do on the rear of the house.

If the doors have an open crack that the pipe crosses, they may try to use a Sawzall. But that makes noise.
If you use pipe for this purpose (like in front of windows), put a smaller round bar inside the pipe.
When they have cut through the pipe, the metal saw will roll on the bar/pipe inside and won't be able to cut through.

It is important to have the smaller bar shorter than the pipe, and of such a size that it will roll easily.

Also light them up with a spotlight if they drive past with their lights out.

When a vehicle loiters outside my house I take it's picture.

At night this often means that I blast the flash at them without actually getting an image, but it sure prompts them to leave in a hurry.

As for the basement doors, just install a latch between one door and the frame, so that only one can swing open at a time. Then install a deadbolt in the free-swinging door that locs to the second. Make that 2 latches, one top and one bottom.

A cheap means of security are the little hard rubber wedges people use to keep doors open, well they work equally well keeping them closed. Good item to throw into the suitcase for road trips. Mossberg/Remington pump 12 guage shotgun would be my next other suggestion. Good luck and keep paying attention.
