I had a Griptilian tanto, which I liked very much, but I "lost" it. I have never had a knife which I liked so much, so I replaced it. Then, about a year later I found the original, so now I have a spare. Not easy to sharpen, but it gets the job done. I just like having that thing in my back pocket.
I had a bad experience with my Benchmade Nimravus knife. I accidentally lightly touched the blade with my fingers and it sliced into them like a razor. I was amazed as I barely made contact with the blade.
As far as the performance and quality of their knives, Benchmades are one of the best, if not, the best knives. They are my favorite knife maker. I've got a few Griptilians and the Nimravus. I've used them to gut deer and they cut skin and organs like butter. Benchmades are top quality.
Also, what is this NRA code and military discount that you speak of and how do I take advantage of it?
I've got a mini-grip that chews through omega springs at an amazing rate, but honestly I wouldn't let that put you off Benchmade. I would advise staying away from any of their Chinese made stuff if they're still making any. I have a Pika II that's a POS.
ETA: I've had good customer service so far on the mini-grip spring replacements. Seem like OK people.
I carry a Mel Pardu Griptilian and it's almost perfect. I don't know how they do it, but it opens easily and smoothly, and it locks up tight. In fact, it's a little too easy to open. Twice the knife opened inadvertantly, once when the thumbstud accidentally caught on a bath towel, the other when it fell and hit the ground.
I tried looking for a low profile thumb stud replacement, but to no avail. Now I just carry it without the thumbstud. I can still open it one handed, either thumb against the knife or flipping it open.
"and was wondering if anyone has had a bad experience with a benchmade knife of any kind."
You serious? Most normal folks would ask if they liked BM knives. Somebody somewhere has had a bad experience with everything ever made, since the dawn of time. Why would you seek out the nay-sayers???
Apparently, GiggityGiddity had a horrible experience with one.

He cut his finger with a new Nimravus fixed blade!!
I have a used Nimverus that went through the sandbox hanging on some poor GI's Molly gear.
The sheath was impregnated with fine red sand dust when I got it.
They can be picked up cheap on Amazon. But I guess is cheap is a relative term. You are going to have it for life if you don't lose it. And I haven't ever lost any of mine. Do stay away from the custom builder if you think to stock ones are expensive
Like Tilos, I too am a Kershaw fan. I'm also a big fan of Made in the USA knives as well (not wanting to start a debate on this). The problem is, when you look at the USA made Kershaws, with comparable steel, they are comparable to Benchmade, price wise.
To me, the axis lick is worth any premium that might exist.
It is! He is about 5 feet long and his name is Sam. He is my son's snake. I was looking for a well lit place to take some pics of my BMs and thought that because it was well lit it would make an interesting backdrop.
It is very docile and enjoys being held, would never hurt a person. Rats, on the other hand, last about 5 seconds when they are dropped into the cage.
And I thought they ate corn They are quit docile, but I think rats can hurt them. ( Zoos chose prekilled rats due to injury potential.) In the wild, our southeast, they are mice specialists. I had many rats as pets earlier in life so I frown. But oh well. Great value/$ pets rats are. Great spot to take pics. He probably likes the attention.
No complaints. Between Benchmade and Spyderco I go back and forth as to my favorite. I think the Benchmade is the tougher knife for hard use. But there are features I like about Spyderco too.
