I'm considering a Benelli M1 90 and have a question. IIRC these guns have a system like the Beretta semis where the round in the chamber can be replaced without another round coming up from the magazine. My question is can these shotguns be loaded with the chamber empty and charged just be racking the bolt handle and if so how is this done?

YES.

The Benelli can be loaded and unloaded without feeding a round through the magazine. It will not feed a round from the mag to the lifter unless:

A. The trigger is pulled or gun fired.
B. The shell release is pushed.

I keep my HD M1S90 with 6 rounds in the tube, 1 round on the lifter. Rack the bolt and it's loaded.

To do it, simply; Bolt closed on empty chamber, load the mag tube fully, depress the shell release. 1 Round will move from the magazine to the lifter.

That's about it.

Chuck

PS: This system also makes it very easy for slug transition drills, or slipping in a BB when that lone honker comes in.

I'm sure I'm not the last word on this, but we do have a couple Benellis. I think you would need to depress the cartridge drop lever first, and then rack the bolt.

Thanks for your help. Once I got the gun in my hand I remembered how the shell lifter worked.

I gave the M1 90 a good look this afternoon and decided it was preferable to stick with my 870s.:)

3 into 4

I've got a M 90 that I use for duck hunting. I guess most of you guys know how to load 4 shells into it with the plug still in. Of course, I've never done that. Tom

Tom,

Benelli put an end to the "ghost" load feature a while a go, and the newer guns can't do it without modifying the bolt carrier.

Both of my Benelli's are newer models and I haven't bothered to modify the carriers.

Chuck

My 6 month old Benelli M4 Tactical can float a shell on the carrier and load 7+1+1 (a full mag tube + a shell on the carrier + a shell in chamber) or 7+1 with an empty chamber.

Gixerman1000,

I dunno, maybe they let it because it's not intended for "sporting" purposes. I know that on my SBE 1999, and my M1S90 2002, the bolt carriers have a notch in the bottom of the bolt carrier that prevents the "ghost" load.

Maybe Benelli dropped the notch completely?

Can anybody with a new SBE2 or M2 get an extra shell in?

Chuck

I have an M2 Tactical. :D

I can load 9 rounds in the magazine, and one in the chamber. Alternatively, I can load 9 in magazine, engage the shell release, and the gun is ready once I cock it. Good way of carrying a semi full of ammo without it being considered risky.

Shot a PSG match this Sunday with it and it's a GREAT piece of equipment.;)

I picked up a new M2 about three months ago. The bolt carrier had the notch to prevent ghosting a round. 30 seconds with a dremel fixed it.

I can't load an extra round in my SBE II. I can see where some dremel work could change that, but if I can't get the birds in three shots, then I probably shouldn't get them.

The whole loading system works pretty well once you get used to it. The only time it has ever been a problem for me was last Saturday. I was at the base of a hill and a pheasant flew up at the top of the hill. I was carrying the gun with my left hand and as I raised the gun to draw a bead on the bird, I hooked the bolt handle on my vest, ejecting the shell. By the time I hit the shell-release button and racked a shell into the chamber, the bird was gun. This was sheer clumsiness on my part, and hopefully I won't pull a boneheaded move like that again.
