I picked up my Benelli M1 Tactical yesturday and picked up 100 rounds of 00 Buck and another 300 rounds of Federal Bulk Pack 12 gauge ammo. I shuttered at the thought of reliability after hearing all these things about light loads not being able to cycle through the gun and you need to break her in hard.
I tore the Benelli down last night and oiled bolt and rails. Cycled a few dummy rounds through it and played with the action for a little while. The bolt was pretty stiff and the dummy rounds didnt really cycle too well. So I cycled the bolt a few dozen more times and went to bed.
Today I took along the pile of ammo and invited Sactown and another buddy of mine to come out and shoot. The first 5 rounds that went into the Benelli were #8s from the Federal Value packs. She digested them like a champ. We when shot about 60 rounds of buck shot and the rest of the ammo thrown down range were from the Federal Value packs. Not one failure to fire, failure to feed or failure to eject. I shot this gun from the shoulder, hip and even gangster style side ways. She kept digesting the ammo and throwing it down range. This was all under 2 hours. The barrel got nice and hot and she continued to rock and roll. Sactown shot the gun like a champ. Box after box of ammo he had a big silly grin on his face. Ask him how much Benellis suck he will tell you they suck so much he had to buy one himself.
After 250 rounds of #8s I gave my buddy a box of the shotshells so he could shoot his Mossy. I finished the rest of the ammo and it was a good day.
The Benelli digested 61 rounds of Winchester Super X 00 Buck and 275 rounds of Federal #8 Target loads. Sactown took home 9 boxed of 00 buck to break in his Benelli.
The gun was accurate, reliabe and didnt recoil more than an 870 would.
The next time you hear about a Benelli not cycling or recoiling too hard remember my range report.
