I am considering the purchase of a Benelli Nova Pump 12-ga. 3 1/2" for pheasant hunting. I have a couple of questions: 1) How do you remove the barrel? 2) And, what is the overall length of the shotgun when it is broke down? The broke down length is important because I want to put it in a Pelican Model 1720 gun case. The case inside dimensions are: 42"L x 13-1/2"W x 5-1/4"H

Lastly, how corrosion resistant is the finish on the barrel?

Thanks.

1) How do you remove the barrel?

Assuming that the Nova is unloaded, begin by slightly opening the action, enough so that the bolt's locking lugs clear their groves in the barrel extension. Bringing the action completely rearward will suffice.

Unscrew (turn counter clockwise) the magazine cap and remove the magazine spring.

If there is a magazine extension installed, remove the magazine/barrel clamp (need a flat head screwdriver) and unscrew (turn counter clockwise) the extension.

Pull the barrel straight out of the action.

2) And, what is the overall length of the shotgun when it is broke down?

length < 35"

If you're storing the gun, barrel and maybe a few odds-n-ends, the case that you're looking at has more than enough real estate.

Lastly, how corrosion resistant is the finish on the barrel?

I live in a VERY arid region, and my firearms as well as my fiance's Nova are hardly exposed to the elements (other than HOT sun). The safe remains extremely dry.

In other words, I can't answer that question for you. However, the barrel is industrial chromed.

I have a Nova SP (the short barrel antipersonnel model) and I've taken it into the field after wild pigs backing up a friend (he's got 90 acres of forest in the boonies of Texas) very hot, humid and we were sweaty, moving slow through the brush. The action and stock are covered in plastic, no worries. The barrel had no problems either. I use Sentry Solutions Tuf-Cloth (sort of like a super silicone cloth) on all my guns, it actually embeds in the metal to become a nearly permanent antirust finish. About $11 from www.brownells.com and well worth it. So either the factory finish of the Tuf Cloth did it's job. :)
