Hey guys, found a Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun for sale, $75 bucks. Only problem is, the end of the barrel is a little "bent"....Not in the sense that it is curved or something, but the very very tip of the bore looks like it has been squished in just a little bit. If you look straight at the barrel, the area from about "9 O clock to 11 O clock" is not perfectly round. This obviously is not normal and probably would affect accuracy drastically, but is it fixable?

I know a gunsmith who I would take it to if it is fixable, but I thought I'd put out feelers first. It almost looks like it could simply by forced back into the normal shape but I'm no expert, so I dont want to assume.

If its a cheap and easy fix, I may just have to buy this gun!

Thanks

You'd need to use a barrel straightener. They fit inside the barrel and push outward to raise dents out of shotgun barrels.

Here's the tool at Brownells with a pretty thorough description

For that price, he could buy four new barrels. You should check with your gunsmith to see if it's more cost efficient to fix it, or to just buy a new one. Mossberg barrels are relatively inexpensive. Just my .02

Halftime, perhaps I should have been more clear, I wasn't suggesting that he buy one  Heck, we work on a bunch of shotguns and we don't even have one for that same reason, its a bunch of $$$ and we don't get enough dented barrels in to justify the expense. A good shotgun gunsmith will likely have one though.

Or just cut it back and run a true cylinder bore if the barrel is long enough in the first place to cut without going under the 18 inch level.

Or if it is only at the muzzle a tapered mandrill will likely lift it out with not much effort.

You might want to do a search on Gunbroker for Mossy barrels. Saw several this morning under $50.00

If the gun functions properly, it's easily worth that price. Buy it and worry about fixing or replacing the barrel later, you'll still be money ahead.

As long as the rest of the shotgun is in serviceable condition......

RUN DOWN THERE WITH CASH IN HAND AND BUY IT!

You can buy the 18-1/2" cylinder bore plain bead barrel for under $75 from Mossberg, probably less if you look around locally a bit, so for $150, you have a good HomeLand Security shotgun.

The tapered mandrel or an exhaust tube expander might work to fix that, too.

Yep, buy it, buy new barrel. Use old barrel to beat previous owner for his sins. :D.

havlinsales.com has good 18.5" accuchoke barrels. Nice and handy with multiple choke options 81.00 to my doorstep when I ordered mine.

Reading it back, my response came off a little sarcastic. I didn't mean to imply you couldn't do the math. I just wanted to point out that mossberg barrels can be found for little money. Anyway, No offense intended.

Details

Rounding out a flattened side of a muzzle is not likely to return to a decent round condition by using a tapered "spud".
Any force sufficient to make the muzzle round again will also create a flared funnel shape since the steel has some springback effect, so when pushed to the original position, it retracts toward the former position. Even when flared there wouldn't necessarily be a totally round condition restored.

This is the tooling typically used by specialty shotgun gunsmiths (see that I have all 3 gauge sizes):

Here is a barrel muzzle in sore need of proper attention:

Now it has less than .0005 deviation of size and roundness restored:

Naturally you will want to see the posting I had recently done showing some dent repair here:

If you want to read about the barrel bulge ring problem from the beginning, you will see that I was explaining that not knowing the cause, in the beginning, didn't mean that there was no actual cause, just that the full facts hadn't been discovered.

Does that make the situation of dent repair possibilities clear?

I first read "barrel straightener" and figured that was like a board stretcher, then I find it is a real thing reading on. I love this board.

No offense taken, I was badgering myself for not being more specific
