Berdan to Boxer primer conversion

Just to add fuel to the fire...for me, Berdan primed steel cases are STILL reloadable. Just buy the proper depriming tools, and the proper Berdan primers...no problem. FREE, reloadable cases are FREE, reloadable cases...especially in tough-to-come-by calibers (7.62X39 for me). With the cost and lack of availability of ammunition, that further (to ME) makes it more attractive...and what if the SH DOES HTF. I'm even setting up to cast my own, in the various calibers I reload. Initial cost of equipment being a consideration...LACK of ammunition availability being a much BIGGER consideration.
And especially, to the OP, a few thousand cases would be the tipping point...

That'l teach you.....don't argue with women, even if you win....you'll regret it!

Done the conversion myself years back when 7.5 French stuff was neigh impossible to obtain....Buddy picked up a 36 MS & had a few cartridges.........checked with available data and determined the stuff was roughly .308 in performance..........fired a couple of what he had, pried out the expended primer...flattened the berdan anvil with a punch and internal support. Drilled an appropriate flash hole and stoked 'er up.....He still has that gun and some of those reloads today........thing shot really well for something that was only dropped once!

Only real problem you'll run into is the occasional odd diameter primer pocket......generally tho, a cheap swage setup similar to RCBS's will handle the problem..........have even heard of folks resorting to a bushing for an oversized pocket...........now THATS desperation!

ali9cg8: as I said in post #15 I'm doing it right now, without too much hassle. It really doesn't take too long per case and it only needs to be done once. Not sure how hard it would be using a dremel though, as I mentioned I'm using a drill press.. Shoot me a PM if you want any extra info on my process or run into problems..

Ignore all the other BS post in this topic, some people just need to post whether it's relevant or not..

Thanks
Mike

I successfully did it with some 308 win brass, just for kicks. It took a lot of work, and I do not feel that the time invested was worth the results. That is, unless thats all that you have to shoot. Like you, I just wanted to try it. Personally, I would convert them into beer money, via the scrap yard.
I used an end mill to remove the anvil and a small drill bit to drill the flash hole. I don't remember if I had to deal with a different diameter or not, this was a long time ago. Good Luck with your idea, Lightman

Edit to add, they make a tool to deprime them with that does work kinda like a can opener. You can also use a hydraulic method, but thats kind of messy. I would be worried about a shotshell primer being able to handle the pressure. Lightman

Ohhhh, trust me, the reloading obsession can strain relationships regardless of gender. I love shoes and clothes as much as the next woman, but only a certain man is impressed by the calluses on your fingers. Reloading isn't conducive to a french manicure.

I am a female, but I appreciate the insight and generosity of knowledge that everyone (mostly) on this site is willing to share. You give it to me straight without assuming that I'm an total idiot. Generally, when asking for advice in person, the responder feels that by answering a question allows the green light for hitting on me:/ I've said enough about my personal woes, and now I'll go back to being an anonymous screen name.

Oh, and to those teaching their daughters how to shoot and reload, I tip my hat to you. That's awesome.

Many years ago when you could not purchase any 7.62 X 39. I reloaded the Berdan primed rounds using the water method and Berdan primers purchased from Uncle Mikes. Back then (25 years ago) it was just about the only way you could shoot that caliber.
It was a true pain in the rear to reload but it could be done. The Boxer and Berdan primers are not the same size and of course the anvil, will cause you problems if you try to swap them out.

"Actually....I'm a "she", not a "he". And, regardless of my gender, I consider heart attacks to be very serious, but I always prefer not to associate medical emergencies with my reloading hobbies.

Very much enjoyed your blatant and mocking dismissal of a simple idea that I brought to the forum in order to confirm whether or not anyone has ever attempted such a thing. Simple as that.

You might also want to address your replies to the actual commenter instead of posting general wisecracks to amuse fellow readers. I'm serious. As a heart attack. And I'll also "waste my time" in whichever way I prefer. Feel free to elaborate on the various ways that you enjoy spending your free time. I feel certain that you will enlighten us all."

OUT FREAKING STANDING!! Thank you for putting ignorance in its place
