Beretta 81 spare magazine?

Is anyone here using one of these import 81's as a primary weapon? Or, are most all of you treating yours as a range toy?

If the latter, then even if your one magazine goes missing or gets broken, you could put it in the safe until you can obtain a replacement, whether new, surplus, or modified from an 84.

That's true, but being an out of production gun, the supply of magazines may get smaller as time goes by, and be harder to get and/or more expensive. Nothing wrong with using two magazines on the range either.

It's not an out of production gun. Beretta is still making them. At least the 81FS, which takes the same magazine: http://www.beretta.com/en/serie-80/

Just watched a YouTube on how to convert a Model 84 380 mag to work with the 32 acp. He just bent in the feed lips to match the factory 32 mag.

I see it and also the one I had until I got this one as a primary choice carry weapon. It is certainly small enough to carry in my pocket but pretty close to the maximum for that mode. I've long liked the 32 acp (and 32S&W family in revolvers) as a carry choice since it is very controllable and repeatable even under high stress situations within what I consider my likely effective perimeter. It's just slightly lighter than my similarly sized Colt 1903s and two ounces lighter than my smaller Beretta 1935. I have an old Lou Alessi pocket holster for a Sig P230 that works well with the 81. When I gave the old 81 to my friend I kept one of the magazines so I have two for the newer 81. Interestingly the magazine that came with the surplus Beretta is a matte finish while my old one is a smooth bright blue finish.

I did not see any of the modified Robertson mags on Gunbroker or their home site for several weeks, though I kept checking.

They did have them on Guns America. I ordered three this weekend, and received an email yesterday (Monday) that they had shipped.

Update on the Robertson’s modified 84 mags.. I bought 3 of the first ones they sold, and had to do some fitting to my 81. I have run a hundred or so rounds through each, and the springs have loosened up. They work perfectly, and using the mag loader, they will each hold 15 rounds. I’ll probably buy some more instead of buying new or surplus when available.

I just got back from the range after testing my modified magazines (the new ones). All 3 functioned flawlessly. At least 2 of them will actually hold 15 rounds, but getting the first round started can be fairly tricky being that these are tiny rounds. They all drop free.

This may have been communicated in an earlier post, DK Firearms states on their web page that they are expecting a shipment of 81 magazines next month, October.

Have a link to them?

I got mine from Gunbroker searching for Beretta 81 magazines. I would provide a link but it appears that search doesn't bring up anything now. The name of the company is Robertson's Trading Post. Someone here on THR mentioned they also post on Guns America. If I find them I will post here.

Havok, I barely beat you to it. Apparently the Beretta website had "real" mags for $50 or so, but they sold out a while back. Robertson's had them on Gunbroker a month or so ago, but I procrastinated and they sold out. For some reason they still have them available on Guns America. I ordered three this weekend and I got an email that they were shipped on Monday.

I also saw a video on you tube where this guy bought some 84 mags and used a hammer to tap the feed lips in. Seemed to work, and you can buy 84 mags from a lot of places. I’ll bet the surplus mags sell out very fast, this might be a good way to get some additional mags. I’m going to order a couple and try it myself.

I got my three Robertson's modified Model 84 magazines in the mail today. I may or may not have a chance to take them to the range this weekend, but they feed and eject just fine when I run rounds through them by hand.

Then you should be good to go. My first set had one that wouldn't even go in the gun right. All three had issues with the slide not being able to close either. The second set have been perfect - even the followers appear to be better.

FWIW, the modified mags that I got from Robertson sort of worked. They would hand cycle just fine, but all three would hang up on the last round when I actually shot them. Maybe Guns America still had examples of their first attempt at modification? I talked to someone at Robertson, sent the old ones back, and got three new ones within a few days. I used all three of them last weekend and they worked just fine. I had zero malfunctions.
