Over the last year I noticed quite a few members who are new to pistols or guns in general and picked up a Beretta 92 or 96FS.

There's something you can do to lighten up that trigger so it's bearable. Pick up a 92D spring. The D is the double action model and has a lighter spring, so makes the trigger much nicer.

Elite IIs and MAYBE the Vertec IA's (not sure) already have them, but AFAIK the rest of them don't.

I've heard some folks put 1911 springs in there as well? but I haven't tried it.

If you want to feel the difference before you take the 'plunge', feel the trigger on an Elite II, as mentioned earlier they already have the 'D' spring.

I think springs may be available from Beretta parts and services. If there's any interest I'll dig up their number. Someone please correct if I'm way off with anything I posted above. I've never done this as my Elite II came with a D spring, but thought it would be of use to newer shooters.

Something to hold you over before you send her off to Ernest Langdon who is THE MAN.

The other 95%

of the trigger job is to take out the hammer and sear and mirror polish the mating contact faces until they are smooth. Use 600# paper and oil, making sure to keep them square (don't change the angles). Grease them with Tetra or Militec when you re-assemble. You will have a SA trigger that breaks at about 3.6# and is glass smooth.

Cool trick Skunk! If I ever get one of those things I'll try it out.

Your right Skunk.

I did it on my last 92 with a Wilson 19lb. mainspring. I got rid of that Beretta but I just got another one two weeks ago. My D model hammer spring is sittin' at the house as I type this here at Ft. Campbell. I got it from www.langdontactical.com for 3 bucks. LTT is also supplying my trigger (black speedbump) and Elite II extended mag release.

For those that want to replace the hammerspring (mainspring) its pretty easy.
1. Remove grips (with the grips off, in the lower back corner of the frame, you'll see the retaining pin for the lanyard loop/mainspring)
2. Make sure hammer is down, push lanyard loop against a hard surface.
3. While pushing down, drift retaining pin out and EASE up on the pistol. The lanyard loop and mainspring will come out then.
4. Replace spring, reassemble in reverse.

Hey, thanks for the info.
I was thinking of sending mine off for some work...

Not that mine needs it, the trigger and action are already the smoothest I've ever owned... but I was thinking of getting some more out of it by lightening the pull.

Whoa, read Langdon's bio...
This cat is officially The Man:

Chief Instructor, U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper School

Head Instructor, U.S. Marine Corps High Risk Personnel Course

Those are just two items of his list. If you have any questions about a Beretta - He is the guy to talk to. No Doubt.

Ernest is the man when it comes to Beretta work. Now he's working on SIGS too. The work is not listed on his site yet, but he does do the work.

Went with Wolff's lightest (16lb?) mainspring in my wife's Brigadier, lighter than the "D" spring. Still fairly heavy, but reasonable, and much more shootable than it was out-of-box. Very easy to install too.

Ernest Langdon is the man. Great work and all-around nice guy too. He's hard to get a hold of sometimes, but rest assured he'll take good care of your baby.

I've had a 1911 buddy even get a Beretta because he liked my trigger job so much. They all rib me about paying HOW MUCH for a trigger job then--"Hey...this is pretty nice." :D

Question
Is the "D" spring just a lighter hammer spring? Or is it a different spring from the hammer spring altogether?
Thanks in advance.

Its just a lighter factory hammerspring. They call it the "D" model because the 92/96D (DAO) pistols come with this spring from the factory to help ease the trigger pull some.

I bought a spring kit for my 92fs & have been satisfied with the results. The kit replaced the hammer & trigger springs. Not a bad deal for $17 :D
