Beretta 92 vs. Taurus PT92

General Reply

Well, thank you everyone; posted this thread before my shift and what a response upon getting home to check on it!

To address a few things, yes for whatever reason my boss has put the whole "Are you not capable of handling a pistol?" BS in front of me, I think he's retired military and just set in his ways. But yea, prior to that remark I was looking forwards to purchasing one of those bad*ss Ruger SP101 revolvers with a decent sized barrel. Secondly, a Beretta style with wood grips is mighty handsome...

Here's what convinced me:

Also, while off-duty, has anyone found decent ways to CCW a 92 style? I'm thinking "shoulder holster" is my best bet, probably. On the hip while at the post or on patrol, naturally.

IMO get what you want.

My dad has the pt92 and it's a great accurate gun. No problems in the reliability department either.
I bought a m9. Same to be said as the pt92. I'm not too crazy about the safety being on the side because I have short fingers but aside from that I like it.

I have no experience with the PT92. I do have to wonder what the heck that screw/bolt/pin (?) is for in the back of the magwell/grip.

If you don't like the safety on the pt92, you will hate the frame mounted safety on the Beretta.

Both are good, but given the large difference in price versus the (in my opinion) small or nonexistent difference in performance, I would go pt92.

Thats just me though.

Sub-Topic

Does anyone have other experience with the Beretta 92 Compacts? That would really fit the bill, but I'd prefer some version of that model without a rail underneath...

Hey, there ain't no
"frame mounted safety"
on the Beretta, yo!

One of mine is a 92 compact, just as reliable as its full size counterparts... While still not a small gun by any stretch of the imagination.

Beretta 92 Compact

This Compact model 92 seems very promising, I'm gonna swing by my local spot and make some inquiries tomorrow morning. Tell me though, is it more of a "specialty item" than others? Presumably so, since there's a surplus of service pistols out there, but does the price reflect that much? Are we likely talking about a $900 gun now, as opposed to a $650 92fs?

Both are the same gun. Taurus has the safety/decocker on the frame not the slide and a light/laser rail on the frame, Beretta does not.

Try them both and see which you like better.

Jim

This was my choice.

Not at all they are around the same price as full size unless your attempting to find a SB, Type M or another version imported in very low numbers...

^ Then you will have to look at the used market as the current Compacts from Beretta have Rails and only come in Inox.

I've a Beretta 92FS.

That said, I looked at both the Beretta and the Taurus when I was looking at purchasing my first 9mm. Both are fine guns, in my opinion.

What won me over to the Beretta?

Honestly, in the end wanted the Beretta name more than I wanted the Taurus name.

I've never been disappointed one moment in my decision. However, performance wise I strongly suspect I would not have been disappointed with a Taurus.

I'd suggest getting out and shooting them, if you have the opportunity. If one doesn't stand out more than the other, then pick the one you like for whatever other personal reasons you wish.

In the end, so long as you have a reliable gun and YOU like it, then it's all good.

I've tried carrying the full size Taurus PT-99 but it was just too long in the grip. My Beretta 92 compact has a shorter grip and just fits into the "practical to carry" size. It's still a bit on the large size for comparable capacity 9mm's (my EDC 9mm is a SW-6904). Good luck.

best wishes- oldandslow

PS- mine is the old style without the rail-abomination. They are running in the $500-700 range on Gunbroker.

Pt 92 af

No problems with my old pre-decocker Taurus. I'm a fan of the frame mounted safety. I like the 3-dot sights...shoots great. I prefer the Uncle Mikes rubber grips (pictured) to the original wood ones.

This is the only Taurus handgun I've ever owned. These have a reputation for being very good. I've never heard a complaint from an actual owner of a Taurus PT 92. Negative opinions about Taurus PT 92 guns based on bad experiences (or hearsay) with other Taurus models is nothing other than bovine excrement.

Is this a typo?

For those that have both, the front strap of the Taurus looks more square than the Beretta. Is that true, or just an optical illusion?

If Beretta mags don't fit in the Taurus, I'd think that would be something that would lead me to the Beretta as you can find the Beretta mags just about everywhere.

The Beretta is a higher quality pistol. For a few bucks more get the Beretta. You will spend way more in ammo than the price difference. I prefer the frame mounted safety on the Taurus, but learned to just use the 92FS safety as a decocker. Problem solved.

D'oh! That actually was a typo!!! SLIDE mounted safety is obviously what I meant to say.

I do have to wonder what the heck that screw/bolt/pin (?) is for in the back of the magwell/grip.

It's the Taurus security system, when locked it renders the pistol unshootable.

Update

Well, I dropped-in on the friendly folks at
Birmingham Pistol Wholesale and it turns out that they did have a Beretta 92 Compact available! Unfortunately, it was only in 40 cal. and was DA only; between no safety and the very small difference in size + not being 9mm, I was obviously forced to pass. Apparently they're very hard to come by when searching specifically and it should be noted that the size difference is hardly noteworthy - the barrel was approx. 1" shorter, nothing else. I was honestly expecting something between a Cheetah .380 and the full sized 92, but not even close. I guess every little but helps, but still...

What I did find was a "like new" 92fs in the case with both mags and a cleaning kit for about $475 tax and all (they have something of a surplus in the area). I traded a couple old .38's toward the price and have a couple hundred bucks to go with an easy 60-days on the layaway, but I'm almost tempted to put it towards a new one at this point it's been such a steal!

Then you were more than likely looking at a Centurion = shorter slide w/full sized frame.

Here is a comparison picture of my 92Compact Type M vs M&P45c. It has a shorter magwell and is single stack, the Type L's were double stack and held 13rds.
