With my tax return coming in I've been thinking about finally spending the money on a 9mm or .40 S&W pistol. A recent trip to a local gunshop yielded a Beretta 92G and 92D, used, for $399, box and such included.

First off; is this as good a deal as it sounds? A brand new Beretta 92FS goes, retail, for $599. They were over-selling it at the location for $650, so I'm not really keen on that, but for a gun with only a bit of visible wear on the barrel (no rust or pitting; just a spot that looks like it needs to be re-blued) is this a bad price?

Second; safety. The salesman was kind enough to inform me that both models had no true safety mechanism, just a decocker. On this I'd like to know...

A; How big of an issue is this? I try my hardest to practice gun safety above all else. It was drilled into my head even when I was handling a BB gun in front of my dad. I know the basics; don't leave a loaded gun laying around, always check for a round in the chamber, make sure the safety is on when not in use, don't put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot, etc. Does anybody have any experience with firearms with no true safety other than the user or any tips? (in terms of carrying in this case)

B; Are there modifications available to make the safety lock the trigger as well? This is probably unlikely, but I figured worth a shot to ask.

Other than that, any thoughts? I'm trying to approach this carefully; its my first semi-automatic and first pistol that isn't a .22 LR. I saw some other firearms in the store that were within my price range (around $500), but might have missed some. Any suggestions on other models? I can go closer to $600 but am trying to be a bit reasonable on price (thus why I'm looking at used firearms.)

I may be reading this wrong, are you saying that you had a chance to buy both a Beretta 92G and a 92D for <$400 and you didn't jump right on it.

Even if both of them didn't work right and you had to cannabalize parts from each to make one working gun, you'd still be ahead. If they were in CA, I'd be asking where they were so I could drive over tomorrow.

On the other point, the owner was correct that neither gun has a manually applied safety. The G model is a de-cocker and the D model is Double action only (DOA). If you wanted a model with a safety, you should buy theses, sell them and have plenty to buy a new one

Both models are perfectly safety to carry and were in fact designed for the LE market.

Sir, you underestimate me. My tax return isn't in yet or I'd be only asking about the modification. But your statement reassures me.

I plan to get the G (9mm) and had been considering the D (.40 S&W). I know that, at this point in time, the two rounds are practically (key word there) the same (once again, 'practically'), and I plan to try handling the D, but the G has thicker, molded grips that feel nice in the hand.

They should both feel thee same, BTW the .40 model is the 96 as their frames are identical except that the 96 has a wider ramp. They even both take the same mags...the followers are different.

I think the 92G is one of the best 92s they make and is usually in higher demand because it was mostly a LE only item

Again, the 92 is in 9mm and 96 is .40. I picked up my 96 used never fired for sub $500. Depending on the wear and tear the $399 may be a good price (but it's not very clear what you are speaking of). You could probably deal with the guy on the firearm get closer to $575 if you want new. Gallery of guns (www.galleryofguns.com) has the 92 on sale for (in my area) 560-590, see if the dealer has a special he may not be telling you about. If not place and order through a GOG dealer.
