I have a Beretta 96 that I primarily use for target shooting. Last week I noticed that the safety/decocker didn't decock any more. The safety still works but when I drop the lever to safe the hammer stays back. When I drop the hammer, the trigger is disengaged until the safety is turned back to the fire position. The gun does not fire when the hammer is dropped with the safety on. As it stands, given what I use this piece for, I'm not deeply concerned, but I don't like the fact that something isn't working right. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe its growing up to be a 1911:)

Im not shure, mine has not done that to me, Ill go
take a look at mine and see if I can find what might be causing it.

I dout the slide portion is the problem,
The grip frame however has that little black thing in the middle behind mag well toward the RH side, with the slide off lock the hammer back and push down on that thing , If the hammer falls then I look at slide portion.

sounds like the Safety isn't engaging the Hammer Release Lever properly--that's the "little black thing" lucas_flesher is talking about--the safety pushes down on that to disengage the sear and drop (decock) the hammer. So either your hammer release lever is worn down, or the safety is worn down.

Funny, I intentionally did this with my (brand-new, month-old) 92FS: I bought a used hammer release lever and filed it down so that the safety doesn't hit it, thus giving me a sort of "cocked-and-locked" mode, exactly as you describe above (and it's a "drop-in" modification, so I can go back to its stock configuration easily). Of course, given what I use mine for (purely range work), I'm not concerned with changing its decocking characteristics, either.
