ive been looking at the bereta couger for a litle while now and like the looks and feel of the gun does anyone here use this weapon? if so what cal? which configuration da/sa dao? thanks for any info:cool:

I've had my Beretta Cougar 8045 for a few years now and liked how I shot with it, liked how it was very similar in operation to my 92FS, and its quality fit. However, don't know if anyone else noticed this, but while shooting my Cougar, it seems to spit out a lot of lead out the back while firing just about any manufacturer's cartridges, from reloads to factory ammo. It's definitely something I consider to be more than a distraction. Funny how I didn't notice this at first while trying out the Cougar to begin with. As with all things, your mileage may vary.

I have an 8045...

I've had it for three years and really enjoy the gun. It functions great and it's entirely reliable.

I wish it held more rounds (my mags hold 8 rounds)
I also do not like the sights however, I do not have a recommendation for replacement sights.

It's a joy to shoot and is very accurate. I really like the feel of the gun. It was my first .45. It and the BHP fit my hands better than any gun(s) I own.

I really began shooting it after having Langdon Tactical (Ernest Langdon) did a level one trigger/action job on the gun...the trigger was not too good out of the box. The action job won't reduce the trigger travel, but it sure made it fall clean and crisp!

I'd give the gun a thumbs up!

Yup, very happy indeed.
The mag capacity issue is the only complaint, but considering that the only other gun in it's class, the SIG P245 also has a 6 round mag, it's even stevens there.
I have an 8 round mag for it, and ordered a grip adapter from Beretta and that works just fine.

I have still not experienced a single stoppage of any sort. But then again, I've only fired new made ammo with it and no reloads.

Accurate too. I've shot 1 inch groups at 15 yards with it, standing. ONE INCH. That's not bad at all for a fighting gun. I'll take that any day.

In fact, my kitty is on my hip right now as I type this.

I had a full size 8045 for three years and can't comment on the mini. My experience with the Cat as a functional weapon was superb. My complaints about it are pretty much mirrored here already, the mag and follower are massive for only holding eight rounds, and it should hold nine or possibly ten for its girth. Subsequently, at eight rounds, the grip could have been made a lot thinner, not that I had a problem with it, but it made acceptance of the pistol more difficult in the mass market.

My second complaint is the excessive angularity of the front of the weapon. Lots of wear points on the finish and makes for a strange looking mix of gracefully curved back end and squared off looking muzzle area. Since getting a factory refinish of a Beretta is next to impossible in my experience, that was a looming problem on my pistol.

My final complaint is the field strip. I used to have to tip it upside down to get the slide back on with the locking block aligned with the cam on the bottom of the barrel. It didn't have to be done that way, but it was a heck of a lot more convenient than the pictures in the manual.

Aftermarket accessories was a dry hole when I was an owner. It probably remains that way.

Well, the Cougar remains the Undiscovered pistol. This is an oversight of Beretta. They don't want to even try to market it. They want the movies to do it for them, but the movies like the 92.

Oh Well.

How many State Police use it? If I remember right, Virginia is using a .357 Sig Cougar.
Or maybe it was Henrico or Chesterfield County.

what about the grease?

Was interested in the cougar, so went onto the Beretta forum- all that talk there about having to "grease it up" in certain areas to make it work properly, kinda turned me off to it. The only greasey gun I want in my safe is a Garand. Went for a Sig instead, cause I'm not a 1911 fan, I discovered after shooting a friend's Springfield milspec.

I don't grease mine up. I tried that... trying different greases and all that... Then I tried some different oils in it.
It really doesn't take that much.

I'm using CorrosionX for Guns right now, no more than in my other guns... still works just fine.

I'd get in in .45 ACP, simply because it is the only .45 ACP that Beretta makes. It also happens that the 8045 is the one I did get.
I'm very happy with mine. I never noticed that I had any lead flying back from reloads, or that I had to take extra care in greasing. I just oil the bearing surfaces like any other gun and it runs fine.
It operates like a Beretta 92, though the sight radius is a little shorter and the balance is a bit further back.

"How many State Police use it? If I remember right, Virginia is using a .357 Sig Cougar.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is issuing the 8357F Cougar. Virginia State Police use the SIG 229 in 357SIG. Henrico has the SIG 220 .45 and Chesterfield the SIG 229 in .40S&W.

my cougar "L" in 9mm is perfect for me. Just ordered a 8045, the 1/2 in differance in grip size is not a problem, both fit my paws easy.

Yeah the reassembly is a bit tricky the first time or two...one you get the trick to it..its fine.

I just clean it after each range workout, kleenbore cleaner & oil..and not much oil at that, no grease needed. As with a car engine...dirt & heat are the enemy.

I use only factory ammo..not one hiccup yet.

I have the 8040 Cougar. I won it at a Friends of the NRA Dinner. I can't shoot it worth a damn. It is a fine pistol but it is not my choice for carry.
Came with two 10 round mags. Hi-caps are 11 rnds so capacity is not a major issue.

"Thanks Landric... I could have sworn I remember seeing .357 Cougars in Virginia - could have been NC - but I was sure it was in VA."

Well, you may well have been in VA. I am sure some departments in VA issue the Cougar, but the three you mentioned are all with SIGs. In fact, VSP is trading all their "old" P229s in for new P229 DAOs. So, I am hoping there will be some VSP 229s on the local used market soon.

I have had one, 8045 for 4 years and I love it !! I do agree forthe size of the grip it should hold more though..

I maintain it just like any other pistol that I have and I have not had any problems with lubrication. I have wear on the barrel but don't seem have have any anywhere else.. I think it's a very underrated pistol....:)

I had an 8040 on loan from a friend that was going to sell it to me. I like the way it felt but like Path, I couldn't shoot it well at all and so returned it. If I had been accurate with it I would have definitely bought it, I liked it that much.

I don't care who uses it -- I'm still waiting for the Cougar to be available in my state. I'll buy the 9mm and .45 in both blue and inox...:D I want two of each -- the Cougar is the only reason I haven't bought a .45 yet and I can't wait for them to show up. I envy your state gun choices.

Funny how States do not say which movies can come in... or what books... or what cars you can drive. Well other than California there on that one - diesels and strict emmisions etc... but still.
In my opinion limiting the handgun selections based on the input from idiots who know nothing about them is asinine... It's like saying "Here in this state, Converse All-Stars are banned." It's stupid.
