this large coil spring is broken and has been for a long time. the gun still functions.
I have the new spring ordered. This is the large coil spring that stays attached to the barrel when removed from the receiver, (#6 on Brownells schematic PN C95387). From my research this is not a do it yourself repair.

does anyone have any experience replacing subject.

any guidance or assistance would be appreciated.

Well, all your research indicates it's not a DIY repair. Sometimes the obvious answer is the best one.

I have not worked on an Extrema but have repaired a number of 391's. The gas system looks similar but the parts don't look identical. The outer lock nut on a 391 takes a special spanner wrench (or Channellocks used carefully) to remove it. Mark the location of the lock nut so it can be put back into the same location. The lock nut position controls the spring tension and thus the gas pressure delivered to the operating piston. That being said, if it functions with the spring broken, just keep on shooting it. It may not need to vent any gas with the loads you are using.
