Im not gonna lie - it was struggle.
I wanted M71 so much, but there was none!
And when they did come into our stores, i was resisting, foolishly thinking that hoarding guns isnt the way...
But it is
And there is no way back...

So throwing away reasonable adult approach, i got Beretta M71 for about 300 USD (In Czech, everything is more expensive here) and i dont regret it

Its compact size (similiar to PPK) .22LR pistol with 7 (8) + 1 rounds and, i bet this isnt comon say about .22LR gun, its combat proven. Used not just by Mosad or Israeli air marshalls, it repeled terrorist with AK47s and assasinated few another bad boys.
More about that in this excelent 9-hole review

I dont know from where mine gun is, but i got to choose from thre exemplars, the choosen one was little bit more beaten on outside, but when i pushed slide, it had good tension, the gun felt firm, but still free to move with parts what should move. Looks like it was a good pick

It was dirty. A lot. There was litterally some dry plants in magazine, but after cleaning? It looks like it was shot once or twice and then carried a lot or used as practice or show tool. Some scratched finish on outside and thats all.

At first i was thinking more about money that im giving away, but just as i bring it home and for first time could really dive in what that gun really is, it changed everything.

Im really not fan of compact and subcompact guns, because it just dont fit in my hand so i most of time i carried full size APX. Well, M71 is compact gun done right.

Sure, .22LR is less demanding on gun construction than 9mm, but it just fits even in my quite big hands and it feells good. It have more adventages, but character and feel of GUN, is that one big thing.

Main technical feature would be classic beretta 92-style big ejection port and reliability - there was just two mag related problems (more about that in moment), cheapest SB club ammo worked fine and HV + HV HP too. With HV ammo guns starts to be little snappy, so i didnt try CCI Stinger and will do some research first

For such a short barell its nicely accurate, which is almost pointless because you will just dump all mag as fast as you can, then you will press heel release and fire another mag, repeating until you are out of ammo.
Yes. it have heel positioned mag release, its less ergonomic, but not an issue. Actually i would say its fort this size of gun better placement.

And now magazines...

Factory one is solid, on the look it feels little ... non-beretta? I mean its kinda ugly and rough thing, but fits nicely and pinky ledge makes gun ergonomic complete. The thing is, factory mag is exactly same size as after market ones, but follower is little bit bigger, That means that factory one holds 7 rounds, but almost identical after market holds 8 and both can get 9 rounds. But whit 8 round beretta mag will not feed first round reliably, same with 9 rounds in after market mag.
With small .22lr round it gets to be issue sometimes as you will easily loose track how many round is already in there.

I also had issue with disassembly lever (and once more i thanks to 5-Shots to help me with that). Its simply to operate and no need to explain that, but since APX use similiar system (lever) which is on that gun fool proof, i apparently didnt paid attention to M71 lever and while clining or in proces of reassembly i accidentally pushed lever to epicly wrong position and jammed slide. Once 5-Shots told me that, it was easy fix - just leverage slide against mag well and pushed slide to psoition, where i was able to rotate said lever, but i was lost for some time

And big reveal at the end - i actually carry this gun. Obvisouly its not for firefight - yes, it did well in those, but there is reasson why it was replaced - but if i go just down the street or to park, i have M71 with me. For my body build, its really nice and s suck with 9mm compact and subcomact guns

Anyway even for just plinking, its awesome gun, a lot of fun with cheap ammo and it quickly becames my favorite gun. Not just that, it also showed me that Beretta guns from this era worth it.

So mayabe you will soon see my review of Beretta M12 ;)

Yeah, we need to pass exams to get gun licence, than we ask for permit to buy gun from concrete cathegory and when we got that and gun, we need to register it.

Congratulations, nice little pistol. I had one but I sold it to purchase something else (big mistake). The positive thing is that I sold it to a big Beretta collector (over 400 Beretta pistols and counting...) and since then we became good friends.
It was a very accurate and fun little pistol.
This was mine:

Whenever an importer brings a big shipment of guns such as this into the USA, I think I need one, then have seconds thoughts, and often hesitate until too late. Fortunately, my LGS was able to locate one of these and even kind enough to remove the ersatz silencer that was affixed "permanently" in order to get enough points to permit importation. The gun is a bit rougher than 5-shot's beautiful specimen, but functions well and shows that Beretta style. Guests, especially those from Europe, enjoy shooting it and it is utterly reliable. It was a bargain at $300, and who knows how it was used before I received it? Highly recommended.

God knows how many rounds later - nothing new :D its still champ and there is no wear even when im shooting HV (S&B HV HP,, very good ammo), just grip panels looks liek they will break in year or two.

But i still didnt find some info about durability when using "Hyper" ammo like CCI Stinger or even regular HV. What you guys thinks? I like that gun too much, to just test it. Ofcourse i dont expect it will fall appart after two shots of Stingers, but still - its old gun, old design and even that it was usedy by militaty, i dont expect that military .22 ammo 30 years back was same powerfull as now some higher loads

No need to even try Stingers...they were really made for rifle use. Standard and HV are just perfect for the Berettas. Why batter your aluminum frame more than necessary. A quick clean every 1000 to 2000 rounds and Bob's-Your-Uncle.

Regular high velocity ammunition should be no problem for this gun, but as noted above, Stingers and Velocitors were developed for rifles and their capabilities are largely wasted when fired from a handgun. No need to batter the gun or assault the ears with hyper loadings, in my opinion. Of course, I have never felt the need for magnum rifle cartridges or +P centerfire loads either.

Thanks, my concern was based mostly on that HV, because mentioned SB ammo is (by my experience) superior in reliability to most of common ammo in same price range - for example S&B club (standard) tend to bend when loading and so.
Also have some leftover stingers from sold rifle

Since im cheap bastard and worry about overpenetration (thats obviously not problem with .22 LR) i also didnt find +P/Magnum loads interesting for me

I had a Beretta M71 for many years and shot mostly high velocity ammo through it. At that time I had found a good deal on South African Svartklip HV ammo and bought 15,000 rounds that lasted almost the whole year. The gun digested them well but not only them. I consider the Berretta M71, based on my experience with my M71 and a friend's M71, to be the most reliable and least ammo sensitive semi auto handgun I have shot - and I have shot a lot of different guns.

Mayabe silly question but better be safe than sorry - its normal that chamber isnt completly sealed? While dry firing in front of TV i noticed that lights comes through barrell and i can see it behind the hammer

Im using plastic see-through snap cap, live round seals chamber with rim and there are no wear, cracks or visible damage, so im guessing its ok and working as intended. Anyway i would like to hear additional opinion. Thanks

My Model 70S is basically the same as your Model 71 so there's nothing to worry about with that slight gap there. It's a shame Beretta still doesn't make the Model 70 through 76 medium frame series anymore because they were lightweight, durable, super reliable, and very accurate pistols, especially in .22LR. Mine has been a constant companion both to the range and out in the field for more than 40 years now and except for a slight problem with the factory bluing (which I "fixed" by having the gun hard chrome plated by Metalife), the gun hasn't missed a beat!

Thanks

Yeah, there isnt much .22 guns proven in combat like this one... but i guess they cover the amrket with Chetah and that mouse gun in .22, so dont have need for 70/71

Recoil springs are available on Ebay. I have had feeding issues with some brands of hollowpoints. I normally stay away from them.

Thanks, i will probably get some spare spring

After some testing (on more .22LR guns) im using just S&B HV HP. Reliable and "sturdy" - with some others (including S&B Club) i had problem with cartridge bending while loading into into magazine or other handling

Idahou

While my Model 70S feeds and fires just about any sort of .22LR ammo, it does have a marked preference for Wolf Match Target along with CCI MiniMags and SV ammo in terms of accuracy and reliability.

Yeah, feeding isnt issue, but that S&B Club and some Magtech (i think) just bended when loading into magazine. I do have some CCI stingers but i dont want to abuse M71 with it :D

Probably reached more than 1000 rounds on this gun so small sum up:
No gun related malfunctions
Mags are reliable as long as you load just 7 rounds - newly made mags are marked as 8 rounders, but at full capacity, they become more ammo picky (need more solid cartridges, some cheaper stuffs are bending)
Srews holding grip panels were loosing itself after tens of rounds and there was some reports that grip panels break if you remove tham (thats connected to specific surplus batch as it looks). Mine didnt break, used locktight on screws and its fine
In higher tens, close to 100 rounds, without cleaning, i noticed that some "ammo-dirt" is kicked in my direction while shooting - nothing significant, just observation
Itsl awesome gun

I would say, that until there isnt enough of thick layer of dirt to prevent gun going to battery or chamber round - i mean really physical obstacle - gun will run fine.
