1. Is the slide mounted safety easier to reach than the Beretta 92 series?

My fingers are just too short and fat to actuate the Beretta 92 safety even if I tried using the " push forward method." Each time I actually actuate the Beretta 92 safety I noticed I have to adjust my firing grip.

Can anyone comment on the PX4 Storm safety?


2. Any issues (negatives) that a person should consider before purchasing one of these?

I noticed that in one of the ads it stated that this model was designed to go through 100,000 rounds without failure of any parts. This obviously got my attention. Sounds a little too good to be true.

First point, it's a safety/decocker. Nearly 100% (OK, it's not 100%, because there certainly are "those" people) of people with these guns carry them with the safety off, and simply use the lever as a decocker.

Second point, it is very easy to convert these guns from safety/decocker (type F) to decocker only (type G). All you have to do is remove a ball detent.

I’ll have to check again for sure but going from memory the PX4 safeties are a tad easier to use and they are definitely shaped better than the 92’s. Best thing is you can easily remove the detent and turn it into a decock-only.

Ah, yeah... if you actually plan to leave the safety down until you need it then this pistol is a no go. The safeties are sharper and aggressively serrated and if you try the swipe it forward method you’ll probably hurt yourself. I have L/XL sized hands too so take that advice for what it’s worth.

IMO if you want effective safeties that smaller hands can reach look at the 1911 or M&P or SAO SIGs.

I am comfortable carrying a sa/da semi-auto with chambered , hammer down and safety off. The long trigger pull in da is as safe as that of a revolver.
Taking the first shot in da is a surer bet for me than having to operate a safety in a clinch.

I've a fair amount of experience with the PX4 Compact in training classes, some USPSA matches, and my club's weekly action pistol nights. If you can't find a "G" model right off, plan on converting it from an "F" to "G". It's just the modern way of handling DA/SA pistols and Beretta's in particular.

I wear a size L glove and have no issue sweeping the de-cocker lever down with my strong side thumb. Ernest Langdon teaches and uses his weak hand thumb to de-cock, so that may be an option too.

100,000 rounds sounds optimistic to me for ANY pistol, but the PX4 is built to last. As for negatives, they might be a little more sensitive to sand in the action than other pistols. Detail stripping the slide will be more involved than some other designs. None of these things have been an issue for me though. I have run into issues with Winchester USA Forged ammo, their steel cased stuff. The surface was just so rough and sticky that the magazines had trouble feeding it. The magazine springs aren't quite a strong as others. All other ammo has been fine.
