This fixed sight gun really seems to shoot high. Aiming at the 6 o'clock position at 30 or 40 feet still leaves me about 10 or 12 inches high. Should I try to adjust the front sight, or just aim lower?

Time was most fixed sight SAAs had a really tall front sight... the idea was that you'd file it carefully to your chosen point of aim with your chosen ammo.

But if yours is shooting HIGH, only way you can adjust the front to fix the problem is by adding to it. Try some different bullet weights/ammo.

Or using a firmer grip.

Single-actions will shoot high with a loose grip because they start recoiling up in the hand before the bullet clears the barrel.

Also, lighter bullets will shoot lower.

Interesting comments

I handload and, with this particular gun, have only used 200 gr bullets. I'll brew up a batch of 240 gr and see if there's a difference.

My grip is, in fact, not always perfect. It comes from my "real" hunting sport -- archery. Any tension in the hands there almost guarantees a bad shot.

Interesting. Mine shoots approximately 6" low at 15 yards.

I would rather be low. The front sight can be filed down to raise the impact. To answer the the last question I am shooting 250 grain cowboy loads.

Bullet weight plays a big hand in vertical displacement for handguns, the heavier the bullet the higher the barrel flip, if you are going to shoot the max weight bullets ,the lighter loads won't shoot as high as the heavier ones. Back off on the bullet weight and the flip won't be as high. Lighter bullets will impact the target lower at the same distances as the heavier bullets.

Getting a grip

I'm using HP-38 powder and 200-g RNFP Laser Cast bullets. The Lyman manual prescribes 7.2-7.8 grains of powder. I think this is too much, even at the low end, and, along with a possibly bad grip, is contributing to the flip.

What would be a nice, lighter load for these rounds? I'll load a few up and get back to you with results.
