hello, I am very new to reloading. and new to chat groups or pages such as this one, so please forgive me if this has been talked about before. I am reloading for my S&W M&P 9mm fullsize. I love this gun. I have already loaded some 124gr round nose tmj with 4.3 grains of W231 and that seems to work great,. with an oal of 1.128. today I found what I think is a good deal on 1000 bullets of 124 gr hollow base flat point made by berrys bullets, but I cant seem to find any data on overall length for flat points such as these. any help would be appreciated. I have learned that a lot of people say that oal is gun specific, but I am also unsure as to how to find it for my gun. as for powder like I said before I am using Winchester 231...

Take the barrel out of your gun and use it as a gage at the reloading press.

Plunk Test your load.
Seat shorter until a loaded round will drop in the chamber with a "Plunk' all the way.
And drop back out of it's own weight when the barrel is turned chamber down.

That insures you the bullet is not getting jammed into the rifling leade when chambering.

Once you find the correct OAL / seating depth for your barrel?
Start at the starting load and work up as always.

rec is right on with what he said. I load for two different 9's, a CZ Phantom and an SR9. Use a piece of fired brass and put a bullet in it so it just goes down in the brass, push it in the barrel until it stops. This will push the bullet into the brass. You are now setting right on the rifling. I back it up a few thousandths and test from there. You need to give yourself some variance when reloading.

BTW - you will love those bullets, they shoot very well, I have a couple of them.

so just to clarify... the longer the OAL for my specific barrel the better correct? the plunk test works great and what I thought was a good oal after my plunk test turned out to be a bent casing... last night I was loading 9mm with 4.3 grains of win231 and setting my oal at about 1.030 and I returned to the plunk test today with a oal of 1.123. and it sounds great and falls out by itself. needles to say I messed up yesterday seating my bullets too deep. will they be safe to shoot? and just to clarify the longer the better correct? as long as I am not contacting the riflings.....?

Generally speaking you want the longest OAL that will pass the plunk test AND cycle reliably in your gun. How many did you load? I assume you have an impact bullet puller; if not, you should. I'm not going to tell you 1.03 is okay because I'm not a lawyer. Others may have specific input on that OAL with that load.

Personally I'd pull them.
