Is anyone else out there using Berry's plated 230-grain RN bullets in their .45ACP(s)? What COL have you found works well?
I'm trying to work up a plinking and practice load for a 1911. I've already done various searches on this forum as well as "Googling" it, and havn't found a thing about COL. My newest Hornady Manual lists their 230-grain FMJ .45ACP load at 1.250", but that seems a bit short to me with Berry's 230-grain plated bullets.
Thanks for you help.

I just checked a handful...1.255 for Berry's and 1.262 for Rainier's w their longer nose.

I have been shooting them at 1.260. It probably doesn't make a big difference either way. :)

I prefer Berry's 185 grain hollowbase round nose bullet myself. It's the same profile as the 230 grain bullet, but cheaper and lighter recoil. Since I'm just shooting them at targets anyway, it doesn't make any difference, since they shoot to the same point of aim as the 230's in all my .45's.

I just took a loaded factory 230 FMJ round and set up my seating die with it and seated the Berry's bullets to that setting. They shoot great and feed through everything I've tried them in (in .45 caliber, of course). I suggest doing the same thing with the 230 grain bullets and don't worry about it.

Hope this helps.

I also use 1.260 +/- .005. I've determined that move of the variation is due to the shape of the bullets and doesn't seem to cause any problems at all.

I use 5.2 gr Win231 with the Berry's 230 gr RN plated bullet, Win Large Pistol Primer and OAL~1.260-1.265" They feed well and shoot well in my G21, Wilson Combat and Kimber Custom II.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.:) Using your recommendations, I put together a couple of dozen rounds this afternoon with OALs of 1.260" +/- .005". They seem to drop into my 1911s chamber (barrel removed from gun) just fine. I'll take the gun down to the gravel pit for the real test in the morning. Thanks again.
