just looking for feed back on a load using berrys 230gr plated 4.6gr HP-38 set at oal 1.21 anyone with experience on this load what do you think?
Sig sauer P-220 elite and a colt combat elite. Thanks

Plated are have gone up so high in price in the last few years they cost more than true jacketed bullets. Go with jacketed (precision delta) or lead and forget about the over priced plated bullets.

Nothing wrong with that load jbisky, although if both barrels and magazines can accept a slightly longer COL of 1.25 or 1.26" you may want to stay in that range. My Berry's 230RN loads have ranged from 4.5 to 5.2 grains at 1.26" COL.

What Steve says is true, but you've probably got a bunch of Berry's so might as well load up and shoot 'em.

That is very light, but should work fine, although I load that, and similar 230 gr RN bullets between 1.260 to 1.265.

Steve, with all due respect the OP asked the THR forum for some very specific information about a particular bullet/powder combination based on actual personal experience of THR members.

Even though your information may be true, your reply post did not address the OP's question and for me, appeared to express a tone that he/she was perhaps using the wrong bullet. If I was unfamiliar with THR forum, I may feel unwelcome and may choose to seek information from more approachable forums - which I thought THR represented.

No experience with HP-38; But I have/do use 700x:

Berry's 230RN
4.4-4.7gr. 700x
Rem 2 1/2 Primer
Remington Peters Cases, 1.266", with a light taper crimp, ending the COAL at 1.265"

Thats the load I've been using for about 2 years now.

Good Luck!

I use Berry's 230gr with HP-38 and when working up some loads I did some at 4.6grs, however they were a little light and would get slide lock on the last round fired. I ended up with 5.3grs. and I really like that load. I would work up a few different ones to see what works best. Your gun will determine that, also I loaded mine to 1.250 COL., your shorter COL may be fine,

Here is my load
Berry's 230gr RN
HP-38 - 5.3/5.4 grs.
COL - 1.250

That load looks fine.
Hodgdon recommends 4.3 - 5.3 gr of HP-38 with an OAL of 1.20 for a Hornady XTP

Although if I were you, I'd probably start a bit lower & work-up.

Lee also recommends 4.2 - 5.3 at 1.120. for XTP and Lead.

The Berry's bullet is .001" oversized from jacketed, and should run at maybe upper low-range to lower mid-range with the OPs load.

Thank you for your replys and information.Ill definitly move up on my col to 1.25.and yes i have 250 bullets from berrys to load up,but will in the future look into the other suggested sites. thank you guys.
