Was looking at my local Academy Sporting Goods store today, they carry a good handgun selection.
They have a Bersa/LLama 1911 for $249!
I know the old LLama pistols are hit or miss but I didn't know they were aquired by Bersa. I have several quality 1911's but was wanting a milspec plinker and this is $200 less than the Springfield. Anyone attest to the quality etc?
Thanks,
BT

Try A Rock Island

I have one and it's been really good. If that's too much, a firestorm is decent.

Hi.

Your Llama 1911 is manufactured by Fabrinor Vitoria of Spain, which is in no way owned by BERSA of Argentina. It just so happens that the US importers/distributors for the two different manufacturers are closely associated. on paper, and virtually the same entity.

BERSA products are imported by Eagle Imports
Llama products are imported by Import Sports

SGS Importers International created the brandname 'Firestorm' to market what are essentially slightly-modified Bersa and Llama products. The modifications are minor and done right at the respective manufacturer's plants.

Your 1911 is probably the Llama Max-I .45 Government.
To my feeble knowledge it isn't as 'mil-spec' in dimensions as the above-mentioned
Rock Island Armory .45

Older Llama's are tainmted by a reputation for soft-ish steel and not accepting drop-in parts readily. Things may have changed by now, but those complaints are rarely made about the Rock Island Armory. I'm getting one myself (or an equivalent Armscor) this July. A Springfield Armory mil-spec would cost a bit more, but is supposedly all-forged steel, and is certainly worth a look, but they aren't available over here.

Mil-Spec

You can get the Springfield WWII Mil-Spec, I have one I paid $350 for and I don't regret it. It was made in Brazil and the machining is very nice, plus it can take any mods you want. As far as I know this is the closest to a real Mil-Spec as you can get with a new 1911. Although, i'm sure the llama's are probably ok I prefered to stick with the something closer to the originals.

A friend bought one of the compact 1911 from Llama. The extractor broke and extracted itself after about 170 rounds of FMJ (Remington). He took the pistol back to the dealer and traded for a Springfield.

Mine ran about 350 rounds before extractor broke. Took a while because would never fire a full mag with out problems. AS a pistol to practice malfunction drills works great.

Too bad Spain whimped out on us.
For some reason I have a hard time knowingly buying something that comes from a place that thumbs their noses at us.
