I am looking for the best Bolt Action rifle in .308 that I can get for around 400 I would prefer it to have iron sights and be easy to mount a scope.

I would appreciate any suggestions

I have a Howa 1500 in .308 with the Hogue stock. It's heavy but very accurate for the price (right at $400). The quality of construction is on par with rifles that cost much more. I chose it over a Remington 700 SPS and feel that I really didn't lose anything in quality by paying a lower price. Don't know if it's available with iron sights. Mine came drilled for scope mounts. I use it for deer hunting and it's certainly accurate enough for that. The Hogue stock is darn near indestructable also.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard .308, Very solid & accurate rifle at a good price. You might look at Tikka t3 as well. Good rifle for the money and built a little lighter than the Vanguard if weight is an issue.

go check out the used rack at your local gunshops (if you have one). there may be a good steal in there, take notes and report back your findings and more guidance should follow... thats your best bet for that price range IMHO.

If you don't have to have a NEW rifle (Which my suggestion would also be a Savage 10 or 11 series) then go with pgeleven's suggestion and check out a few gunshops OR pawnshops.

Remington 700 or Winchester 70 would be my target...AND you can get it already with a mount and scope on it.

Check out the Stevens 200 .308. [Savage 110]. Got mine for 319.00 and put a nice Shooters Edge scope for 69,00. Total was 401.00 with rings and bases. They are very accurate.

Winchester M70, but it might be hard to get one for $400 unless it's a push feed model.
The Ruger M77 is a nice rifle also.

Wow, cheap for a M7. They MSRP for close to a grand, now. Mine is in .308, a later 20" barreled stainless one. It shoots 3/4 MOA even with the soda straw barrel and is so light and handy in the field, it's just a great little hunting rifle. It's an all around gun, mountain and open terrain accuracy an light rifle, quick to the shoulder for brush. I put a 2x10x40 Weaver on it that's equally all around. I haven't hunt with much else in the last 10 years since I got it except for handgun hunting.

I think for 400 bucks, though, unless you can find a deal on a used something or another, you're in Savage/Stevens exclusive territory. They're good, functional guns. I have one in 7 mag. It'll shoot 1 moa and the trigger is tunable. Mine is the non-accutrigger and I set it to break at 3 crisp pounds. I put another stock on it and sold the birch wood. It's a free floated stock and helps a bit keep the groups tight as the barrel heats up. It ain't as pretty as my Remingtons, but it's a good shooter.

+1 on pawn shops.

with the way the economy is and gas prices, people in our area are SLAMMING the pawn shops for a little extra cash. our pawn shops dont have enough rack space for the amount of firearms they now have.

I bought my .270 Rem 700 sps for $400 OTD a while back. Its plenty accurate for my hunting rifle. No iron sights though.

I like my savages and my 700's equally, cant go wrong for $400 on either.
