I'm looking for a bargain-priced, fairly accurate .308 bolt-action rifle as a backup gun if my M1A is in the shop. I'm particularly interested in anything easy to mount a scout-rifle-type scope on.

Any suggestions?

What's your budget? How long are you willing to look for it? IIRC, there were some Israeli K98 Mausers rebarreled to .308, and they have a ladder rear sight that could be easily replaced with a scout-mount. I think Savage used to have a version of the 110 so configured. After that, I think the costs of mounting the scope are gonna start to bust your budget. I have a Spanish FR-8 (98k with a CETME barrel, cute), but I wouldn't scope it. It's the only 98-pattern misurp bolt gun that has an aperture rear site that I know of. Shoots well for me.

If you'll accept a more conventional mount, then there's a blue jillion out there in used-gun racks. A Remington 788, a 700, et endless cetera. MMM, cheap 308......Bought two Israeli 308 Mausers for $60 a piece, and an Indian Enfield in 308 for $70........ All with like new bores!!!
Is that cheap enough for you?

Greg,

When & where did you get the Izzy Mausers? I'd love to have one, but they seem to have vanished.

Ditto for the Indian Enfield, except the vanishing part.

Just bought one at a auction a couple of years back, they are out there, just have to hunt.........
Century imported thousands in the 1980's, must be some out there.........

Do the Indian Enfields have a ghost ring sights or the open sights? Also, does anyone know of a good source to pick up either the enfield or FR-8 and for how much? I've also been looking into a good .308 mil-surp, but I really prefer the ghost ring sights.

Hope this isnt hijacking the thread too much.

Savage 10FP.

I have their Model 10 in .300WSM and it's a tack driver. Got an opportunity to shoot the 10FP .308 with the AcuTrigger.... Sweet!!! I've never heard of one that isn't a good shooter.
