I am looking for a 308 win bolt rifle for my wife. I want this rifle to be a nice rifle that can be handed down to my Son. I have been considering a weatherby vanguard. I am in the research stage and plan on taking about a year to figure it out. Who makes the best action in your opinion.

I personally love the FN action. Its very solid and proven, but honestly, there are many great actions. What exactly are you looking for?

Is the 1k price tag for rifle, rifle and optic, or action alone?

1k for the rifle. I want a nice rifle for my wife to deer hunt with that my Son would be proud to say was his Moms hunting rifle. They are both left handed and I am right handed so he wouldn't hunt with any of my rifles. I have a couple of browning a bolts, but I think I want to get her something else and I don't really know a lot about who makes the best action. Something that would be worth putting a new barrel on in the future if needed.

Used sako, they are out there. You have a year, are you set on the caliber? If there is flexibility there it makes thing easier.

Being a left handed shooter I can tell you what I would do. I would start with a Google of "Left Handed Rifles" and see what is out there and available. Even new current production left handed rifles are only done in production runs making them sometimes hard to find. Once you know what is out there you can make a decision and move on it. Browning was making a nice X Bolt in the $850 range.

Remington 700 Milspec. You opened a big ol can of worms on that question. You will have many suggestions from which to choose.

There is no more classic American rifle than the Winchester 70 Featherweight. In 270 would be the classic choice, but I think 308 is more practical.

The Extreme Weather version is about as good as it gets as a do it all in any conditions, no excuses rifle. I have one in 308 sitting in a McMillan Edge stock that is the best rifle I've ever owned.

Both of these are good options. If they offered a 1:10 twist version, I'd definitely own one.

Does your wife require a reduced length of pull (LOP)? If you need a reduced LOP and a lefty that's going to really narrow your choices.

Savage 10 FCP-SR you will love it I have the 20" it shoots 5shot groups of .435 @ 100yds
I have a vortex viper 6.5-20x50 on it.

No she doesn't need a reduced length of pull. She just wants a bolt gun that won't beat her to death. I figured a 308 would be fine.

Ruger Gunsite scout rifle, I say this because you take off the flash hider & put on a muzzle brake. Really tames it down. Take off the rear site & you can use the scope rings that come with it, that is if your wife doesn't like the scout setup.

Browning X-Bolt. The Hunter weighs less than 6.5#s naked and my 308 is very accurate with a stock designed like a sporting shotgun. The recoil pulls the stock away from my face making it comfortable to shoot even from a bench. Shoots a 1/2 inch with my hand loaded 150g Sierra Pro-Hunters.

Winchester Model 88, pre-64 in excellent condition can be had for that, and is a beautiful and very accurate rifle that would be the pride of most any family. Of course, she would have to put up with that lever.

If we're throwing lever actions in the mix I'd add the BLR .308 take down model.

(OK, maybe she wouldn't want that and it's more me that does.)

I also vote Tikka. Mine is in 7-08. Recoil is milder than a .308 and not much different in performance. And it is a tack driver.
