I know, confusing thread title, didn't know how to word it.

I'm looking to buy a revolver. It will be for home defense and occasional IDPA and training classes. I like the GP100 4" best, but I was wondering what would be a 22 revolver very similar to the GP for cheap practice purposes. In other words, I know Taurus makes the 2" ultra light in 38 special and 22, so that would be a great set if it fit my needs.

Are there any good 4" 357 and 4" 22lr that match up close? I'd even like to use the same holster.

Thanks in advance

WHen I got back into handguns about 3 years ago, I bought
S&W 625 5" Bbl. .45 ACP
& S&W 617 6" Bbl. 10 SHot cyl. .22 Bbl.
The sight radius is within 3/8"
They are both 45 oz. not quite the same balance,
but the 617 is a good warm up SA and DA.

I think a 4" 617 WOULD BE A GOOD COMBO
WITH A 627 4" bBL. OR
A 686 R" bBL.

THEY ALL have virtually the same grip

I hav ethe HOgue full profile grip with finger grooves
and checkering in ROsewood on my 625/617 combo.

If you want to use the same holster with the 617 you
would need to look for a K-frame you would need
to find a used model 19 or 66

I had a Milt Sparks holster for the 686P L frame and
the 617 K frame was loose in that holster - the L-frame
is longer.

K frame M13 or 19 and a K frame M17. DUH. :D

The Taurus M85 has an awesome trigger, but I think you'll find the M94 in .22 to be pretty stiff as is the norm for most .22s. The K22 target masterpiece (not just the name, but a good description) is probably the slickest DA .22LR revolver ever made, but it's pretty pricey used.

Me, I just reload my M85UL, shoot my own bullets cast of range scrap, and I shoot for near as cheap as any .22. Same gun, same trigger.

Forgot to add, I think the IPDA limit barrel length to 4" Bbl.

Check the rules of the competition type you want to get into
I know the 625 5" Bbl. kicked serious bootie and then they changed
the rules with the 4" Bbl. max length rule.

If/when I get a 610 in 10MM/.40 S&W with the 4" BBl
I'd like to have a 617 4" to go with it. or cut a 6" Bbl. down to
a lenth 5" more or less to have the same sight radius. The K-frame
617 with a 6" Bbl. is approx. 1/2" longer in sight radius . The 610
with the full moon clips is like the 625 ACP and full moons for
quick reloads in competition.

I like the 617 10 shooter for 5x2 Double Tap DA practice.

S&W Model 19 (or 66) and a Model 18!! Next question... :neener:

Here's my pair. A Model 15 in .38 Special would be the exact match to the 18, but the 19 is close, and gives me the option of using .357s for more punch. To be honest, I have only fired a little over a hundred .357 through it since I bought it, maybe 150. Mostly I've fired .38s, got to be close to 500-600 rounds so far. And it looked like this when I bought it.

686 and 617 4" - but so many little crevices to clean when you're done. I think I enjoy shooting revolver better, but I prefer cleaning semi auto.

Yeah IDPA did change to a 4" limit, but I really don't like over 4" anyway. Thanks for all the tips guys!
