Best 40 caliber CCW

Unless someone has just "gotta" have a Glock, and "gotta" have .40, would go with a Sigarms P229 in some form. There have been enough issues with the .40 in Glocks that I would stay with the 9mm in the smaller-framed Glocks. Glock and SIG are both good, but best to stay with a brand's strengths, and avoid any hint of the weaknesses. Having done transition drills at full speed, I am shy of anything with a grip safety, so that keeps me away from the XD. I can use a limited number of approved DA .40 autoloaders as a duty pistol, and voted with my wallet in choosing the SIG P229R with the DAK trigger. Big enough to use as a service pistol, small enough to conceal.

I should add that I have thought of getting a P229 SAS to serve as a spare duty pistol. It would be better for concealment, yet almost as good for police duty.

Taurus PT-140 Pro, I've been very impressed with mine, fired close to 3000 rounds so far, 100% reliable, surprisingly accurate, and it fits me great. Another bonus, these can be had for less than $400 out the door, an excellent bargain in my book.

Really depends on how much you want to spend and Mag Capacity. If you go with the Sig 229 I would get the 12 RD mag capacity. It is a very well made gun with many great features. If you would like to spend less money, but still get an Awesome carry gun I would get the SW-MP .40-I own one and it is one very nice weapon! The grip is so slender that conceal will be easy. It is basically the same length as the Sig 229 [.4 tenths of an inch longer] and has a Mag Capacity of 15 RD. I really recommend the MP as a money saving, but very High quality gun. Another possibility is the Taurus 24/7 .40. Even though it only costs around 400 it is one of the most functional and well made .40's out there. I have owned two. The Ribber grip is very comfortable but is does tend to wear down. Personally I prefer the Smith MP over the Sig and Taurus 24/7. Good Luck with your search!

My Kahr CW40 is awesome. I got it because I knew I would always be leaving a double stack like the 229 or the glock 23 at home. Less then an inch thick, 15 ounces, good accuracy once you get used to the trigger, and total reliability.

HK P2000Sk. I carry and prefer the LEM Var 1 (lightened trigger pull to approx 4lbs)
Accurate, concealable and reliable.

i have three .40s+w carry guns depending on the application, i have the xd service model, xdsc which is my favorite, and then the kahr k40 all are great choices and they all have thier places, but my go everywhere do everything is my xd sc and when i get back it will have a fresh set of 24/7 night sights. makes the great little shooter even better

Being a Big Glock fan, I carry a Glock 26, Kimber Ultra or S&W 442/642, in a .40 I'd go with a HK P2000sk

My choice is my PX4 Storm 40 cal, it is light enough for carry , handles the +P ammo and has a rail for laser or light. about $450.00

Beretta 96D
  • Compact for concealed carry; and
  • Brigadier for open carry / home defense.

The SAS Sigs are pretty nice, especially the single stack version, is that the 229?
The 239 is the single stack model. The 229 is a slightly bigger double stack model -- got them both and they come in a close second to the above mentioned Beretta's.

Another vote for the HK P2000SK.

Nothing wrong with the Sig P229 (a bit bigger and heavier) or the Glock 23 or the subcompact version. I really like my P2000SK though- I prefer a traditional DA/SA for a CCW. Light, extremely well built and reliable.

Sig or Beretta IMHO

*I agree with this for CCW, except for, the having a flashlight on the rail while CCWing, and trying to find, let alone use, a holster that will accommodate it going in, or being pulled out, fast and, smoothly, with rail mounted light attached. Night Sights do the job, along with a small hand held flashlight IMHO. Less chance of one using the gun as a leading flashlight, and being surprised at what it sees, and accidentally shooting an innocent, in the heat, and fear, of the moment.

Or the Sig P229 Carry, and if wanted, for night use, with the CT, Crimson Trace Laser grips, which fit normally into any OWB or IWB holster for fast, smooth entry or exit, of this gun for CCW.

I just got a Smith & Wesson M&P 40 compact and I love it. It fits perfectly in my hand and is surprisingly accurate and reliable. oh yeah, and it was fairly cheap. :D

a caveat: it does not like Wolf ammo, but really, what pistol does?

You can't go wrong with an HK USP or P2000. I had a P2000sk .40 that was an awesome gun, but I ended up trading it away because I didn't like the LEM trigger system at all. The USP .40 compact would be my first choice.

Having said that, I just picked up a new Taurus Millennium Pro .40 as a possible carry gun (couldn't resist the price tag, and Taurus guns have been good to me so far). I ran almost 200 rounds through it today with no problems of any kind. 155 gr JHPs to 165 and 180 gr FMJs, Winchesters, Blazer Brass and Gold Dots. It fed and fired it all perfectly. Accuracy was plenty good and recoil was softer than I expected too. If this performance continues, this gun will enter my carry rotation.
