I only have 1895's. I won the 1st 45-70 in a 4H raffle.
Ditto! I have been resisting the urge to buy a Ruglin for sometime now.If Ruger/Marlin reintroduced the 1895 CB I'd have to think long and hard about not doing something silly like buying one. My JM 1895G would get jealous...
I was shocked the first time I handled one. It just looked like it would be a 12lb boat anchor but it handled like a fine shotgun. Don't know why I never bought one.For me it's the Marlin 1895 LTD's 1- 4 or the "Thin" forearm Cowboy series "26in" barrels. Otherwise, the forearms look and feel fat.
"LimbSaver" recoil pad, Trapdoor loads and cast bullets make mine pleasant to shoot.I was never really a fan of lever guns until I got my 1895 (with the load data/components from the previous owner, meticulous fellow), it shoots 1.5 MOA with loads that have more felt recoil than my 50 BMG.
Yep never judges a book by its cover.I was shocked the first time I handled one. It just looked like it would be a 12lb boat anchor but it handled like a fine shotgun. Don't know why I never bought one.
a original can, may not hold up to the ruger/Siamese loads to long tho.Can modern 1886 clones handle modern stout 45-70 loads?
Well you had to learn somehow. When I tried the lyman marlin loads from my bench the fore stock jumped out of my hand and the scope knocked my hat off. That was the end of that experementing. 300 grain gas check from a lyman mold at 1300 fps and 300 gr hornady hp at 1900 is enough for anything on this farm."LimbSaver" recoil pad, Trapdoor loads and cast bullets make mine pleasant to shoot.
I won't subject myself to the unnecessary abuse of hotter loads.
Could be I'm not tough enough to take it, or maybe I'm smart enough to know the damage is cumulative?
I had one for a while and it was a nice shooter and the long octagon barrel looked nice.If Ruger/Marlin reintroduced the 1895 CB I'd have to think long and hard about not doing something silly like buying one. My JM 1895G would get jealous...
You only need to hold one once. That long tapered barrel. My 1895 is very nice but not THAT niceI had one for a while and it was a nice shooter and the long octagon barrel looked nice.
