Hello all.

I am re-finishing a Chinese SKS I recently purchased. The metal, bore and blueing is in excellent shape. Problem is the wood is pretty dinged up.

I was able to snad the stock down and using an iron and hot towel was able to get nearly ever ding out of the stock. The gas tube wood is in not so good a shape and since removing the wood off the gas tube is next to impossible, I am considering getting an aftermarket gas tube. I have a Yugo SKS with a black aftermarket gas tube and it looks excellent.

I see that there are several makers (NCSTAR, Tapco, etc.), but there are many complaints that they need to be filed down to fit. I would like to get others opinion.

I appears that the Tapco one is the most expensive (probably the best made). Also, can you remove the rail off the Tapco model?

Thanks.

It's been a few years, but I think you just need to drive out a pin
to remove the wood off the tube.
