Very interesting !! I can measure my trigger pull and it changes with accutrigger spring adjustment. So I dont understand how the adjustment does not affect the pull weight.

eh? It does affect the pull weight. That's its point. The little safety trigger thingy doesn't really affect the pull weight, but that's seperate. I'm not exactly sure which part of the mechanism you're refering to.

my brother's thumbhole varminter howa will shoot 5/16" groups. i haven't shot my 10FP yet. both of our guns were under a grand; scopes, rings, stocks, bipods, and all.

Thanks much for all the info folks. I'm going to be stopping at Wallyworld this afternoon to put in an order for a Savage 10FP in .308. I have the scope picked out (Super Sniper 10X42). Now for bipod (probably 9-13" Harris, still investigating) and base & rings (want a 20MOA base).

Hold the phone! You can probably save yourself around $100 if you buy from JDyer here on the forum. Great guy to deal with. My sister just ordered hers from him. He runs a gun store in Georgia, charges low shipping rates and has excellent prices. I think his price for the 10FP (with Choate stock) was $622. You won't have to pay sales tax, and the scope will come with free shipping. FFL of $20 - $30 and you should save a lot of money.

For comparison, his price for a 12FVSS was $520 + $18 shipping + $20 FFL

Walmart is $566 + $45 tax (at 8%) + tax on scope + tax on bipid + tax on rings and base.

He'll have the low price on the optics and all that too, I bet. At least give him a call, he'll hook you up! :)

I spoke with John a bit ago. Very nice guy, but unfortuantely he's out of the 10FPs. He also said that when he can get more of them they're probably going to be more expensive than I can get them locally and already have them in the pipeline. So it looks like Wallyworld is going to be my tactical supplier. :p

D'oh!

Why are you going 10FP instead of 10FV exactly? I know he has those for $433.

Wally world is ok. I bought my Savage at GI Joes here in Washington.

Welp, the 10FP has everything I was looking for; synthetic stock, pillar bedded, 24" heavy barrel, extra swivel stud for bipod, and at a price I can afford. Based on stuff I read here and other places it seemed the best buy. :)

Hmmm, from what I can tell, the only difference is the extra swivel stud for the bipod. They both have "dual pillar bedding."

The 12FV has a 26" barrel and no second swivel stud, while the 10FP had either a 20" or 24" barrel and the extra swivel stud.

Is the stud really worth $50? Actually, after all that tax savings, it's more like $100. ARgh!

Edited: Hey, and that's $100 towards the $170 you'd need for a fancy Choate stock or whatever, that you'll inevitably want down the road. Did you ask John about the scope and bipod and all that?

I posted again to mention that both are pillar bedded, but I see that carnaby has already pointed that out.

Well, with what people around here charge for FFL fees, it's closer to $50 difference. :(

I have the order in, and I'd just assume leave it. I'll be able to take a look at the rifle before taking delivery, etc. Plus I've been beating my head against the search for a couple of weeks now, and just want to get it DONE. Maybe actually get some shooting in! :p

What about the "CZ"? I own a CZ550 varmit laminate in 308 and just love it. has a 25.6 heavy barrel, adjustable trigger, right at 10lbs. A little more than 400.00 though.

For those of you interested, I've also the scope, mounts, and bipod. Here's the final configuration:

Rifle: Savage 10FP .308
Scope: SWFA Super Sniper 10X42M
Base: Ken Farrell SAV-RTS-1-20 (20 MOA)
Rings: Ken Farrell 30mm Standard
Bipod: Harris LM-S

All in all it should be a fantastic rig. Thanks to everyone who has helped with their input and suggestions. Once I have everything put together I'll post a range report and pictures. :)

Hey, check out the evil msrp on the Savage Model 14
http://www.savagearms.com/14u.htm :what:

A few years back when I was .243 shopping two things stopped me from buying the Savage - plastic trigger guard, plastic magazine. Of course that was the pre-accutrigger days too. Sounds like they got their quality up since then. Someone who's done a more recent closer look chime in on those details please.

What I came across during my investigations is pretty positive. I was very Remington-centric when I started but turned to the Savage as I dug deeper. Equivalent quality to the Remingtons but less expensive.

Good choice. I've got that scope on my 10FP and really like it and the mildot system. Had the shorty Harris bipod on it for awhile, but took it off and now shoot off a rest or sandbags. The original stock is just a little too flimsy for bipod attachment IMHO. :)

I'm REALLY looking forward to it. :)

When you say the original stock is too flimsy, what do you mean?

Not stiff enough, it flexes too much, even when you mount the bipod on the inside swivel base. That's one reason I want a new stock....maybe laminated wood or even the Duramaxx from Cabela's.
