This is the last and most important of my posts relating to my next gun purchase...

What is the most accurate, most reliable, toughest and best priced bolt-action gun. It will need to be chambered in .30-06, and have a sythetic stock. My initial vote was for the Remington 700 but I want to explore all options before I decide.

Savage 110 variant, based on all the features mentioned AND value for the money. You didnt mention what your price is, but Savages go for 300-350$ at WalMart in .30-06. That is a bargain any way you shake it.

For time tested, value packed budget minded rifles that do what they are intended for well, it is hard to beat the Savage product. And so it has been for over a century.

P.S. The new Mossberg ATR-100 rifle has promise and goes for $100 LESS, although is unproven in the field, as far as I can determine. If it pans out, I'll get one for the sheer novelty of it!

This is a loaded question

Seems all you will get from this question is opinions that will vary from gun to gun and from now on.

700 series - Remington makes a fine gun, the quality of late has declined (in my opinion) and the trigger will need work before it can fully reach it's potiential. All in all a great gun that will require some tweeking.
My 700's are fine guns and I can recommend as a good reliable bolt action with many after market mod's available. The 700 shoots about .5 MOA (for me) and fit and finish is great.

Winchester - Do not own one, have shot them quite often. I put Win just below the Rem in quality and reliability. Trigger is about the same, maybe a little worse, quality (I hear) may be an issue as of late.

Savage - Long action - I own two Savages I find the action is not as smooth as the Remington, but adequate for all my needs. The trigger (Accutrigger) is absolutely great, breaks at 2.5 pounds with no creep and breaks like glass. The double lug action is strong and safe. The barrels are of good quality but somewhat rough internally, this will go away after about 150 rounds. The group size is average .5 MOA at 100 yards for me, and I'm not a great shooter. The Savage sythetic stocks are throw -a -way stocks but the steel is second to none.

There are others to consider - Howa, Weatherby, and many others I have not mentioned and do not have experience with so I do not feel comfortable commenting on these.

From My experience I would recommend the Savage, with a decent quality aftermarket stock. I have not seen an "out of the box" rifle that will shoot any better than the Savage. I am speaking of rifles in the $500 - 1,000 range and I fully understand that the higher priced precision rifles will preform quite well. But any better than .5 to .3 moa with the Savage or Rem, is just minimal accuracy for dollars spent. If you into precision target compitition, look higher, if your into .5 moa accuaracy along with hunting go with the Rem or Savage,

Just my opinion

Slickest bolt under $1000, Tikka
Super accurate out of the box, under $1000, Tikka
Best combination of parts from the factory under $800, Tikka.
Best value, bolt, accuracy and over all gun for under $600 and dare I say $1000...Tikka. Please, check them out. They will impress you. Other than the expensive mags (but only $49 at bud's) few people can say anything bad about them.

I thought I was going to buy an A Bolt or a 700 until I tried a Tikka. I love mine. Move over to the wood stocks and you get a free floated barrel too.

initially , when i think sythetic and reasonably priced, i allways go savage. But, i understand that CZ now makes a synth model. 'Nuff said. no remmy or savage will beat a cz for accuracy , fit , finish, and price.

I think you are talking about hunting rifles... Right?

For under a G-Note, I like the Tikka.

If you have more to spend, I would personaly go with Weatherby in either the Accumark or Ultra Light Weight. I have an Ultra Light Weight in 30-06, and have used it all over north America with great success. At a bit under 7 pounds loaded with the scope and sling, it is a joy to carry, and not punishing to shoot. Just my thoughts,
Fred

SAKO Finnlight. If you pick one up and try it out compared to the other fine rifles mentioned here you will feel the difference. If you are fortunate enough to be able to target shoot it compared to the others you will see the difference. I have owned or fired, Savage, Winchester, Remington, Stevens, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Interarms, Sako and the latter gets my vote. Interestingly enough, though I have handled many, I have never had an opportunity to sit down with a Tikka, Browning, or Weatherby.

One thing good -ALL of these rifles are now much better than their predecessors and will do you proud!

Lots of good suggestions already. But if you want a platform to play with and subsequently customize with aftermarket parts, Remington 700 series is your best bet. Lots of aftermarket parts available for it.

That said, the best bang for the buck is probably the Savage. If you're buying used, make sure you get one with the AccuTrigger and not one of the earlier models.

I've mostly always been a Remington man. However, in recent years, I've been VERY impressed by CZ rifles. They are hard to beat and are a better gun for the money. Savages are also a super value vs. money. Savages and CZ's both tend to be very accurate.

Savage Model 12FV

You said synthetic stock so I went with the FV on this one, the BVSS-S is beautiful and a slight bit more accuratce, but the FV is a scary black gun. Mine is full of 9 pounds of lead shot in the butt, 4 pounds of huge scope on the top and shoots 69gr Sierra BTHP's into a dime size hole at 100 yds.

I have maybe $800 in the whole package including the scope.

If you get a Tikka, there's no need for extra parts, except for the scope and mounts.

It will out shoot most rifles for the price, nothing extra needed.

What is the most accurate, most reliable, toughest and best priced bolt-action gun.

There is no such thing. Your last requirement cancelled out all other desired qualities in your rifle.

Basically, you can choose any three of the four requirements and actually might be able to find a suitable rifle.
