If you know how to look at a used gun, then there's no question; go with the S&W or the Ruger. On used prices, both guns can be found for not much more than a Taurus, Rossi, etc... (To me, $100 is not much more. Especially for self/home defense. It's money well worth spent).

On a new gun, you are talking $200+ difference in price. I still wouldn't get a Taurus or Rossi, but some think they are OK. As far as used guns go, MOST of the time, used guns are the way to go. MOST of the time, used guns are rarely shot that much. Yes, there are some that have had a couple thousand rounds a year put through them. MOST however probably haven't had a couple thousand rounds in their lifetime. Especially if you can a model 13, model 19, 65/66, that was used for Law Enforcement, FBI, etc... Those might have had 100 rounds a year through them. I picked up a SigSauer P220 45acp that was carried by a Sherrif. (Friend of mine). I know for a fact that he shot about 1-2 box of ammo a year to stay qualified with it. He had it for about 8 years when he sold it to me. Barely broke in.

Older Taurus and Rossi already start off not as high a quality. Some say the newer ones are really good. Again, I prefer used. They aren't like cars that generally have hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Most used guns have very few rounds through them. And at half the price of a new one, they are definitely the way to go. There are some great tips in the forum on how to check out a used revolver prior to buying it. Review that prior to the gun show. Later... Mike....
