Best Budget Guns?

Rifle - One of the most underated rifles out there. The Savage 10/110 series or newer Stevens 200.

Handguns - Ruger MK II .22RF, Ruger GP100, S&W K Frame, CZ75, Makarov. All of these can be found for under $250 used

Shotgun - An older used Remington 870 Express

As far as handguns, I think a used Smith & Wesson model 15 is about the best bargain to be had. Everyone wants tactical tupperware, a $3000 super custom 1911, or a supermagnum bear vaporizer, so the lowly .38 does not get much respect. The result is that you can get incredible deals on these guns. I've bought 5 model 15s over the last year, all for $200 and less. Every one has had an outstanding trigger and been very accurate. Besides, if you can't solve a social problem with 6 well placed 158 grain +P SWCHP rounds, you probably should have brought a squad of marines instead. :)

I'm thinking $250 down.

Shotgun
Rifle
Revolver
Semi-Auto

These are the best deals for the money I've ever had.

Shotgun - NEF Pardner single shot 12 gauge $40

Rifle - Toss up between Mosin M44 $80 and SKS $200ish

Revolver - Colt Agent for $225

Semi - Auto - CZ 75B for $225

OK, I'll Play...

Rifle..New Centerfire Stevens Mdl 200, Mossberg ATR-100. Mossberg has no sights or scope, but does have "Weaver" scope bases. MSRP on Mossberg is $244, last time I looked. Stevens is Savage Arms "Entry-Level Value-Price" rifle line. Inexpensive, but NOT cheap low-qualityquality.

Rifle..New Rimfire autoloader Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60. Well under $200 for either one.

Rifle..Bolt Centerfire Mil-Surp. Any of the Mosin-Nagant series. You will spend a few bucks on mineral spirits, brake cleaner, etc to get all the cosmoline off, but many of the Mosin-Nagant can be bought for under $100. 7.62x54 ammo is cheap, and on par with .30-06/.308/7.62x51 (NATO) ammo in performance. If you want a centefire autoloader Mil-Surp, the SKS series is the least expensive right now. Yugo 59/66 variants frquently under $150

Shotgun New pump action Mossberg 500 series, Maverick 88 by Mossberg. You might find Winchester 1300 or one of the Remington 870 series under $250 if you look around some.

Revolver..Centerfire...hmmm don't know how many new sub-$250's you will find. In previously owned, you can find a lot of Mdl 10 Smiths, Ruger Speed-Serivce-Security Six series. May run across a Colt or two if looking hard.

Pistol..Rimfire autoloader Ruger MK II/MK III are under $250 new if you look a bit. Not sure what the Smiths & Brownings are going for right now. New MK II's are just about gone from the shelves.

Don't think it was mentioned, used Dan Wesson revolvers. The ones made in Monson, MA. Cheap, reliable and unbelievably accurate. You can swap out the barrels, set the barrel-cylinder gap and go.
+1 on the SKS, Marlin 60, Kel-tec pistols

A lot of good suggestions here, but one rifle I don't see is a used Remington 760/7600. You can usually pick up a used example without a scope or with a POS scope for under $250.

If money was that tight, I'd get a 760, a used 870 or 500, and skip the plinkers and handguns, using the money for ammo, practice, and hunting.

Picked up a Taurus Millenium Pro PT-745 at a local
gun show for about $290. Great gun.

What are your opinions on the best budget guns?

I'm thinking $250 down.

Shotgun
Rifle
Revolver
Semi-Auto

The down side of $250.
Shotguns, use single shot Remington and Winchester can be had for aprox $75 and are great guns.

Rifles, the SKS is hard to beat for under $175 used, I have also seen used Winchester 94s for around $175.

Revolver, S&W model 10 for $150 or less.

Semi-Auto, Star model B 9mm or a Helwan(copy of Beretta) in 9mm I have found both to be very reliable and ate everything I have put through them and can be had for aprox $150 or less.

None of these would be my first choice but if money is tight you would be well served by all these. However if you are willing to look around and talk to people you can find fantastic deals on great firearms.

Best under $250

Rifle: NEF Handi-Rifle in .45-70 or a Stevens 200 in anything

Shotgun: Buy an NEF single shot _and_ an NEF Pardner Pump, or buy an NEF Ultra Slug Hunter... Deadly accurate.

Revolver: Rossi .357 Magnum

Semi-Auto: Bersa .380 or a nice Makarov in 9x18

my 2 cents

Personally I would shell out the extra $15 to get a brand new Remington 870 Express at $265.

Or shell out an extra $25 to get a brand new Rock Island Armory 1911 government model for $275.

You can save up the extra $15 or $25 by just not buying smokes, eating fast food, or going to the movies a couple times.

Shotgun: Mossberg 500
Revolver: S&W 642
Rifle: SKS/ Hi-Point 995 Carbine

$250 down

Semi-auto pistol: MAKAROV the first pistol I ever owned, and the best deal I ever made.

Revolver: Used S&W model police trade in's they are fairly plentiful right now I saw one at a show for $150 and it was in pretty good shape holster wear, dings in the wood but totally sound.

Pump Shotgun: Used 870 exspress, easy to come by and a very good shotgun. Some like the Mossberg 500 but I had one and didn't like it, it malfunctioned and had a cheap feeling to it compared to the 870.

Bolt action shotguns/ Break Action shotgun: Almost all of these guns are going to be under $250, H&R and NEF breaks opens are good guns. Older Mossberg bolt actions are ok not the most stylish and cheaply produced but they do work very well.

Bolt Rifle: K31 schmidt rubin!!! One of the most accurate rifles you can own for $100! The ammo is a bit more exspensive, but its totally worth it. Turkish mausers are a good deal at $60 and 8mm about as cheap as it gets. Mosin nagants are also an excellent buy well below $250.

Semi-auto rifle: SKS is a good buy I saw several chinese for $175 at a recent gun show and the Yugos are often cheaper than that. Russians can sometiems be found for $250 if your lucky.
