Since the advent of the 6PPC, studies have been done including a lot of pressure testing and curve analysis. The short squaty cases tend to have more consistent pressure, partly because there is not room left in the case and so handling does not effect how the powder is distributed in the case. In long range shooting , it does not take much change in velocity to change the vertical point of impact. If you test a .308 against a .30-06, with all the same variables, the .308 will out perform the .30-06, hence why Palma Rifles are .308.
