Personal weapons are a personal choice
Everybody has to make his or her own choice here.
I, personally, set a floor of .380/9x18/.38 Special for myself, as I can carry any of the above in anything but a swimsuit. I normally carry something more powerful than my minimum. The secret for me was finally finding a belt/holster combo that works for me.
The belt is from gunnersalley.com (1.25"), and the holster is a Galco "USA" tuckable IWB. This setup is more comfortable, secure and concealable than I thought possible. A spare mag is carried "openly" in a flap-top pouch for a folding knife.
My usual carry is a compact 9mm, which can be carried tucked under a shirt (appendix position) with minimal fuss and discomfort. I may only have one shot to stop an attack, someday, and I would rather have a 9x19 JHP than anything smaller. Heck, I'd rather have a Browning M2 (in .50 BMG) with a 100-round belt, but it would be kinda' obvious under my shirt.
We all have to make our own choices. What works for me may not work at all for you, but I offer my experience in hopes that I may give you some good ideas.
