FWIW:

Can't say what's best for you, but for ME the new extremely slim and concealable Walther PPS does the job.

I've had (or still have) the Glock 26, Sig P239, Walther P99c/AS which at one time or another have been my cc pistol of choice, but without a doubt the Walther PPS is the pick of THAT litter.. :D

YMMV

CCW 9MM's

Well, the way I look at it, some of the finest are no longer made, yet still available on the used market.

S&W 3913
Walther P5
H&K P7/M8 or P7PSP
SIG P225
All are 8+1 shot, very slim and extreamly accurate for their small size, yet the still allow a full grip ( unless you got moster meathooks), and have full size controls, unlike some of the smaller guns. Prices are atleast compareable to newer guns, and sometimes alot less. Plus leather or Kydex is available for all OWB or IWB.

Let me add that I've been going through the exact same thing just as of the past few days. I am a Glock/Kahr striker fired pistol fan, no safeties, no hammers, no muss no fuss kind of gun guy. But I could just never get used to carrying those types of guns with a round chambered.
I've even gone the 1911 route but never felt comfortable with the cocked hammer, always checking the safety to make sure it never mysteriously came off safe, annoying.
I wanted something Kahr sized, DA/SA, yet with a manual safety. The only guns I could find were in .380 caliber, so I took the dive and went with the Bersa Thunder .380. Let me say that for about $270 it is a steal. These are very well made guns and they just shoot great. But, it's in .380 (which costs $10 more for a box of 100 than 9mm does), so I started looking for something in the same size but in 9mm. Kahr has it hands down size wise and in quality and performance, but it has no manual safety.
I went to the local gun store and checked out the CZ RAMI and the other CZ offerings, too thick. I checked out the small 1911's in 9mm, almost as thick as their .45acp counterparts and then again, cocked & locked doesn't appeal.
I thought of the Para LDA, which has a nice trigger set-up I might add, but still almost as thick as it's .45acp counterparts.
Then I checked out the S&W 908, the affordable 3913, I found it to be very ergonomical-less, it felt like an out of balance brick and with no personality to boot. Sigs are thick and expensive.
Then Bersa struck again with their Mini Thunder 9, I do admit it is also kind of thick in the grip, but close in size to their Thunder .380. Here's a pic to compare sizes.

The Mini Thunder is probably very close to the Sig 239 in size but for only $340 at my local dealer, including background and taxes how can I go wrong? I'm going to order one today.
What a wonderful discovery in these great little very affordable pistols by Bersa.

Well, I can tell you where one 3913 is... I bought this one new, and it's a very nice pistol. My Son likes it, and in fact it's his favorite of my little stash, and I've put it "away" for him. I've probably only run 100rds or so thru it, but it was 100% reliable and accurate from day one. :)

I "had" a Walther P5, and imo it is a very high quality pistol, but just too large for my smaller hands..

I'm a PPS man now..

Best Wishes,

You have to handle each pistol yourself to see if it will fit YOU.

People say that Glocks are blocky, but I rarely find that the case - they frame fits my hand well enough to be most comfy - even the super "fat" Glock 30 rests nicely in my grasp. The 26/27/33 grips are too short for even my slender, girlish fingers.

The Kahr has a perfect grip shape, but the trigger reach is VERY short for me.

I like the trigger reach and the backstrap of the SIG P239, but the front feels too squared for my tastes, not the nice roundness of the P228/P229 series.

+1 to the Walther PPS: It's superbly made, functions flawlessly, is accurate out of the box, and provides a wide variety of carry options with three different magazines. The "S" stands for Slim, and it is exactly that.

slender

for CCW I consider having slim profile
is as important as reliability and fit.

Therefore first place is
STI LS9 (0.75 inch)

second Walther PPS (0.9 inch)

Glock 26, SW 3913, SIG 239, Steyr S1A are all good
and essentially in size are the same,
but not slim enough

Here's the reason why my all time favorite Walther P99c/AS pistol has been replaced by my new Walther PPS for concealed carry duty...

M&P 9c

I didn't notice any other votes for it but I'm a big fan of the Smith & Wesson 9mm compact M&P. A good trade off between size and concealability, and I like the two different magazine finger supports you have to choose from.

I must admit I'm a former Glock-hater. However, I now own a G26 and can't think of a better practical small 9mm. IMO the best balance of size (a little chunky), capacity and it's surprisingly accurate.
Next best again IMO is the Sig P239, followed closely by the S&W 3913. I'm not sure why the 3rd gen 'metal' smith autos never really took off. Maybe the goofy safety/decocker on the slide? One of the most underrated guns out there. Good luck on your search.

Old School=good trigger

Still hard to beat a Hipower. 9mm is a step down if effectiveness from .45, so getting GOOD hits fast are especially important. I get good hit faster with my FN HP, utilizing it great single action only trigger pull, than with any of the 9mm's mentioned above, and I've owned most of them, and fired the rest.....except for the new Walter, and the trigger did not feel all that great on it in the gunshop.

Try a Hipower;)

If you like the G26, there's no reason not to get one. You can get a used one for a very reasonable price.

Personally, I carry a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact daily. I like it better than the Glock because I never cared for the Glock's "safety," and I also prefer a steel gun like the Bersa for its extra weight, which makes recoil easier for me to manage. The Bersa is a rather small gun. It's length/height are almost the same as the Bersa 380. It is thicker, though. It has a 13rd double stack mag.

I'm glad someone mentioned the Walther P99c. It's my only carry. Accurate, reliable (no failures in 2000 rds), easy to conceal, relatively light, did I mention accurate? What's not to like (except maybe the price.)

I have a Kahr P9 Covert. Same size as the PM9, except with a 1/2" longer barrel. I used to have a Kel-Tec P11 - great gun - but I decided I was willing to pay an extra couple of hundred dollars for something that was ultimately more reliable. I considered the Glock 26, but the Glock is thick and bulky, and the Kahr is thin and sleek. I carry the Kahr in a Smart Carry holster, inside the pants, right over the jewels. I can wear practically anything and no one knows I'm carrying. Price is a little on your high end - I think I paid $400 for mine, used (with night sights), but I'm very happy with it. Concealability and reliability were my two biggest concerns. I did like shooting the Glock 26, though.

Don't laugh at me, now. I would suggest the Tokarev TT-33 with a 9mm barrel. I have a Norinco 213 that I just finished adapting to Clark's 9x23 instructions, but I haven't had a chance to take it to the range.
It is basically a 1903 Browning rip off by the Russians. It is very slim, only a touch more than 3/4 inch thick. It doesn't print at all when in my jacket pocket, nor when carried behind my right hip. I think IO is selling them for $159, there would be another $30 for a 9mm barrel.
